not good at all. them inflatable life jackets would certainly given them a better chance. maybe they should become compulsery to wear while out.

No fish is worth your life. Why these guys don’t wear what readily available to protect them is totally beyond me.

My favourite rock fishing spot

Mon, 2018-04-02 19:13

And a great 4by spot to get into BUT we always roped ourselves to the bull bar and measured the rope to stop us before going over the edge, really deep water, really shear granite rocks and unless you can swim well over a 100 metres no where to get out until the base of the cliffs.  Deeply sorry to see loss of a precious life there!

When I went there around 15

Mon, 2018-04-02 20:24

When I went there around 15 years ago you couldn’t get your car down there. They had put up the old copper logs. It’s as fishy as it looks. Live herring on a glitter bug float, sit down and wait then hold on.

Not easy to exit the water at

Mon, 2018-04-02 19:30

Not easy to exit the water at The Deeps on a day like today with a steep 2+m swell.
Nearest realistic exit point would be about 250m away NNW with the first 150m through aerated water.
Not sure that most people would make it, even if they'd checked out the nearest exit point when they arrived - especially if they'd been rolled across the rocks and were a bit shocked.
A PFD would definitely have upped the survival chances as it's an offshore wind from that spot today (probably why they fished there). Would certainly have given the person a bit of time to recover/calm down before deciding on whether to wait for rescue or try and get to an exit point.

$80 for a jacket should be

Tue, 2018-04-03 12:36

$80 for a jacket should be part of everyones tackle kit if fishing from the stones. Starting to get boring hearing another life lost when there is plenty of effort made to make people aware of the dangers.

 RIP and condolences PFD

Tue, 2018-04-03 16:37

 RIP and condolences

PFD might be worse thing in these conditions , dont be lured into flase sense of security

PFD makes it hard to swim in  white water - old saying was , white water u cant breathe it u can t swim in it - u drown in it

try to get down into the blue stuff

swim out, head up, look out , asess , down into blue stuff, repeat was hard enough as a fit 20 yr old

pfd makes it impossible to swim

a good anchor and tieing  on is the only way -prevemnting being in the water is 1st prize

with a pfd you dont need to

Tue, 2018-04-03 16:44

with a pfd you dont need to swim. you lay on your back and let your legs do the work. thats the way i was told many years back when working on a wetliner. back then the jackets were a lot more bulky

At that spot there a PDF

Wed, 2018-04-04 06:23

At that spot there a PDF would definitely be more beneficial than not. The rock you stand on is an overhang rock where you can get sucked under and all the under currents there I reckon would pull you under. When I fished it years ago it the water was pretty calm and the best place I saw to get out if you went in was in that cove to the right or if you were quick enough there’s a spot just down on the right where we use to stand to get our herring. There’s no way you would have got up there the other day or in that cove as the backwash would have been fierce. Condolences to the family.

I bought a PFD last week, it

Tue, 2018-04-03 22:19

I bought a PFD last week, it arrived today.  I'm going to wear it whenever fishing off rocks from now on.  Hopefully I never have to inflate it.

Condolences to family and friends.

 Sad for the family and

Sad for the family and friends. Only a matter of time before it is legislated for compulsory life jackets and don't think for a moment it will be limited to rock fishing.
