Boat explosion in Hedland

Heard a story of a boat blowing up when starting at the Hedland boat ramp. They had just launched it, one bloke was parking the trailer/ car and the skipper? cranked it over and bang, build up of petrol fumes ingnited. The joys of having a sterndrive unit pokes its head up again.

He was flown south by the RFDS and is in ICU with severe burns. Friend was on the jetty and still has ringing in the ears from the bang.

yep i can,,,boat owner was just climbing over the gunnel when the boat was started and BANG...he was thrown clear with bumps and bruisess sore as shit but not to bad.guy in the drivers seat got slammed into the hard top blowing the seat out. hes come down hard with several broken ribbs [like i think it was 6] also lacerating his liver .steering wheel torn off.bumps and burns he"s pretty banged up and will take a fair while to get back 100%. he's a hard bastard and wont let it hold him back ,, all the panels in the boat blew out hardtop mounts all cracked and torn out. Boat hopefully is a right off as since new hes had nothing but drammas with it...i think this is close to what has happened as i work along side the son of boat owner ..ive seen several pics of the carnage .on the plus side they had planned to be taking out the grandson but changed plans at the last minute ,

Thanks for the update Mitch

Hope he gets well soon and back out on the water. The boat is only plastic and metal and can be replaced easily, people are not so tough.

I live in Hedland and didnt hear anything about the incident. Cant confirm or deny it. Mind you its kinda typical of how news travels up here. You usually hear of things via the grapevine and not on the standard media outlets.

Hope all will recover and

Hope all will recover and prosper after this sad event.

Even a bilge/engine room blower can ignite of a petrol fume laden compartment sadly.

Better thing might be; before starting or switching anything on, open the engine hatch and let fresh air circulate.

Any spark can ignite a correct mixture of air and petrol fumes including fuel leaking from a tank from an outboard.

He's out of ICU

Wed, 2012-10-10 20:20

and on the mend , was talking to the owner of the boat and he was stunned by what happened , said the poor bastard took the full brunt of the explosion and how it didn't go up totally was more good luck than good management , one very lucky boy , the boat was a Leeder Tomcat from memory 2400 , can't say much more as it's now with the insurance guys ....
