Boat insurance

Tue, 2013-03-26 16:49

Club Marine for me. Had a claim for a smashed windscreen section on my Whitley walk around last year. No replacements available so had to have one specially fitted. All glass, concave and curved. Totally new frame. Repairs to the gelcoat, total replacement of the Bimini and clears because the screen was different. Club marine were excellent. Happy to pay my $500 excess. Job was first class from All Boats as well. Dodd take a while to source a suitable screen assembly but considering only one of 4 panels of glass was broken ( traveling home from Shark Bay) and the amount of work that resulted I was very happy with the outcome.

SGIO

Tue, 2013-03-26 16:08

Congrats on the first boat, Jayce. Look forward to many fun and eventful times out on the water.

I have always had SGIO insurance. They have been very good over the past four years and helped me out on a few occasions without any hassles. No more pricey than say Club marine. Might see you on the water

Cheers

Perhaps since my boat was worth less than $5000 SGIO may be cheaper (Than other companies) for smaller boats because claims shouldn't be that big?

Either way be sure to have your boat is insured because there is no worse feeling than getting home and seeing an empty space where your boat should've been!

That is a whole different story - claims managed interstate not locally I would be leaning the SGIO way and I am in the game

Club marine local

Wed, 2013-03-27 07:17

Yes my claim was submitted to the eastern states however the assessor was local, knowledgeable and very prompt if I had a question or an issue. There were many along the way with my claim due to the lack of a $500 piece of replacement glass. Could not have been happier with the outcome and local assistance.

I just thought it important

I just thought it important to correct that statement. Club Marine has no connection with Nautilus at all. In fact Nautilus was a break away from Club Marine when a previous CEO of Club went and started his own company.

Underwritten completely different as well.

Insurance is like all other products you buy. Put simply you get what you pay for. They don't offer the same cover and so there for the price will vary.

Just to point out i am a Platinum Club Marine dealer so i do have some idea what i'm talking about. Hopefully Adam is okay with this post as i just wanted to correct the above statement.

Thanks Rod

 Was nautalis as older hull

Wed, 2013-03-27 08:58

Was nautalis as older hull and they were the only ones i could find that would insure without a survey. Was about $350 pa for a 10k boat. I had one claim for a electrical fire which they paid out without a problem.

new boat i went club marine as better reputation. $450 pa for a $47k boat. Touch wood - no claims, so no idea aboit service yet.

For your info my boat used to

Wed, 2013-03-27 12:22

For your info my boat used to be with CGU when its was my Dad's.  When Dad passed and it became mine and CGU gave me a hell of a time wanting a complete survey which was not worth it on a $10,000 boat.  Okay its an old hull but photos previously provided to them show the hull is in impecable condition and it is always garaged.  Motor is newer and the trailer is only a few years old.  Ended up being half mine and half mums so they would continue the policy (mum was co/insured on the policy with Dad so was able to continue the original policy.

Then late last year I received a letter from CGU saying they now wanted the survey done within 7 days, - number of calls explaining the boat and me are in different locations and it wasn't that easy given I work 6 days/week.  In the end they agreed to extend it for 2 months to allow me time to provide a condition report.

Was about to get this when I received another letter saying they would no longer accept a condition report from the marine place I had nominated (where it is services annually) as they weren't an authorised dealer with CGU and they wanted me to get the boat and cart it 300km to adelaide so the authorised dealer could do the condition report.  They gave me 7 days to do this.

5 days later I received yet another letter from them saying they would no longer accept a condition report and seeing I "was in no position to get the survey done" (i never told them this I just said it would be difficult to get the boat and bring it down in the next 7 days due to work commitments) they would not be renewing the policy.

Subsequently I wrote them a two page letter informing them of what I thought of their business and how they deal with their customers and pointed out I was taking my business elsewhere and would never deal with them again.

I am about to get a club marine condition report from my service mechanic who is an authorised club marine dealer and insure it with Club Marine.  The quote they have given me was about $10 cheaper than CGU and covers more and includes things such as assitance on trips in case of towing problems or problems with the boat itself (which CGU didn't provide).  Haven't had a claim for the boat ever and only have it insured for peace of mind and liability cover for that just in case event.

Have a mate who owns a brokerage company and he recommends Club and Nautilus saying both are good.

SGIO

Another vote for SGIO, very good if you have to make a claim, they don't make you feel like the criminal as some insurance companies do.

 Nautalis for me.

Check the security requirements with regards to theft.

With some companies if you do not have a trailer lock on or wheel lock and your boat gets pinched your not covered.

May also apply to your trailer when parked at the ramp.

Nautilas don't require this, even though I do lock my trailer.

Just one thing that appealed to me.

Plus they were competitive on price.

 Ineresting point Red Dog.

Wed, 2013-03-27 14:25

Ineresting point Red Dog. You might want to check if you park your boat on the lawn or verge that it's covered. I know with cars if it's not actually garaged and items stolen by thieves  they won't cover you. I know this when some  local scum smashed the window on my Triton and stole my laptop. Worth checking. Mine gets locked in the shed.

I decided to check

Wed, 2013-04-03 21:18

with my insurer Club Marine with respest to verge parking and anti theft devices.  This was their response:

" ... Your vessel is covered all over Australia and does not require an anti theft device ..."

SGIO

Wed, 2013-03-27 13:29

Dont have much choice here because as soon as you give them the 6743 postcode they want to hang up real fast.

Club Marine wont insure here as far as my research indicates and I dont have any mates with boats with them. They have always been more expensive than SGIO when I enquired.

Aside from that SGIO are good and they are advertising at the moment that if they cant beat competetors prices they will pay you $$

We have multiple polices with SGIO and never had a problem with claim resolution, even with Interstate investment properties (storm damage in QLD was fixed real quick).

Club

Fri, 2013-04-05 07:03

I'm with Club, haven't had any dramas, having said that I haven't had to claim either.

I've been trying to get Club to sponsor the site but unfortunately they don't have enough left in the budget due to already having planned the markerting budget for next financial year.  If anyone has any contacts in the insurance industry that may be interested in advertising on fishwrecked, let me know, seems there might be a good opportunity to grab some customers!
