Boat security

over the last couple of weeks I've had my boat raided a few times looking for things to steal.

Luckily i dont leave much in there, had some rope stolen, a pair of boga grips, and a 1/3 bottle of scotch (long story but it was a luckly bottle of cheap red label!), and a small medical kit.

Night before last the dog went nuts at something out side, so went out for a look but didnt see anything. Had a quick look in the boat and didnt see much. In the morning i took a closer look and noticed someone had been inside the cabin under the console, and pulled everything out from under the gunwales (gloves, rope, stubby holders etc).

The only thing taken which im annoyed about is i bought a new rope for tieing up to jetty's etc, (you know one of those fancy ropes thats easy to tie and undo etc.)

So it bought me to think about security i can add to the boat. Does anyone know if you can get motion alarms for boats? Im sure someone has told me before you can put something on the boat, and when there is movement (like someone walking on it) an alarm goes off?

What do other do, if anything for security?

Cheers

Bodie

buy a full boat cover to start mate, most crims think its to hard and takes longer to get in and it protects your tub as well.

other than that, where my boat is parked up with the cover on i have 3 cameras that look over the front yard and records 24/7, i can see who comes and goes at any time.

i upgraded one of the cameras to a better nightvison one and works a treat.

good luck mate, you will catch em soon.

motion detectors

Wed, 2012-05-30 10:20

I think you can get the ones that run between a couple of reflectors, and if anything breaks the beam, it sets off the alarm - kinda like the "auto" door bells in shops where they chime when you break the beam as you walk in the door.

Dick Smiths maybe

Another one is the sensor flood light - porta flood comes on if anyone comes within what ever range you set the sesitivity for,

or you could buy a cupple rusty rabbit traps from the markets

The detector sensor will probatly work well I used to have them make a racket when going off and work on motion so perfect, a full boat cover would do also but a csutom job can set u back 2k start with motion detector just rember to keep the batteries frewsh :)

PS what area is the boat parked in ? it seems like a bad one :L(

I've got a full boat cover, hasnt stopped them in the past.

Dont really want to say on a public forum where the boat is located :) it sticks out like a saw thumb parked where it is, so its a magnet for thiefs!

What im thinking is a little device which is motion sensored and just sets its own alarm off when its moved. a bit like one of those personal  alarms old people carry on them.

Also considering the camera idea as well, however this is only a reactive measure, so it wont stop them going through it unless they see the camera first.

Motion sensor

 Hi Bodie

I use a cheap motion sensor I picked up from Bunnings and mounted it on the inside gunwale.

works well and a cover adds extra security.

Sensor similar to this

My boats guarded by a massive steel gate and a rotty/bullmastif so no worries here.

But yes you certainly can use security devices. The only problem is that as an outdoor unit something good is expensive . but  1 PE beam in the deck will certainly go off if someone goes inside. It will also get set off by cats etc etc. Outdoor PIRS would be a bit hard with false alarms. Why not try a sensor light and some massive floods ? and they can also be hooked up to a siren device but may annoy the neighbours !!

With the CCTV Remember you legally need a sign that says you are being recorded bla bla blah which in itself is an effective deterrent. One more point the walking on the deck bit, a pressure mat on the deck would work  connected to a alarm system it will false alarm less than other things but only cover the area of the mat.

Wed, 2012-05-30 12:40

If possible i would go the motion sensor spot light. It worked for me. Totally light up the whole area when someone at night came near the boat. Use to spook people on the foot path that set it off. Difficult to disable as well. Because most if not all these people are cowards they don't hang around with a 200w spotty on them.

Personal Alarm

Wed, 2012-05-30 13:02

I used to have the same dramas Bodie (even with a cover on). What I ended up doing was running mono through the eyes of the cover and around the cleats and barwork of the boat attached to the sort of personal alarm used to protect doors of people when doing personal security etc. (small cannister that is activated when the lid is removed) so when the filthy theives pull the boat cover up to get in, they are sprung.

I would think a boat cover

Wed, 2012-05-30 13:27

would be a thieves dream, no one can see them under there, they can take thier time going right through the boat deciding what they want and what they dont, then if you dont go in the boat for a week or three youll never even realise youve been robbed untill the morning of perfect weather when all your gear is missing.

I dont leave sfa in the boat, its a pain in the arse loading unloading all the time though but rather that than have all my shit stolen.

you can get infra red sensors with a remote buzzer from bunnings - with teh smoke alarms etc. I have one in my driveway, so (battle-axe block) so anyone coming down driveway sets off chime inside - could easily position one on your boat to detect any movement

you could join the CPBA as they have hard stand now with full CCTV and night monitor cameras 24/7 and live in Bosun/Care Taker with a dog, yes its a bit expensive to start and join but you must be a member (cheaper than other clubs with hard stand or moorings)  to get the cheaper rate for hard stand .  Think if you join now they won't charge you the full years June 10 to June 11)  fees as our new year starts 30 June but please don't quote me on that one, not sure, they did it last year but not sure on this year, Our membership year is from June to next June, like the financial year and yes we aren't full yet but the hardstand is nearly full.

Sounds like to me you need better security for your big boat, you did say once upon a time where you have it stored and please Bodie, move it, to easy for thieves any time of the day or night, regardless of what security you have, the frigging mongrels will find a way, but I like the idea of a very high pitch siren under your boat cover that will burst their ear drums, or disorientiate them like the house alarms are supposed to do..Good luck

Thanks Roberta

Problem with CPBA, or any boat club for that matter, is the boat is located in 1 location. which means I'd have to go get it everytime i wanted to use an alternate ramp. Cockburn is 45 minutes away for me unforunately.

Ive thought many times of moving it to a secure boat facility, but the restrictions of having to go get it each time deter me from it.

Oh an i did say once apon a time where i have it stored, but have moved recently :)

Being in the security alarm industry (35 years plus)

Wed, 2012-05-30 19:43

I would advise against having any passive IR devices outside in the boat, firstly you will be exposed to birds, cats, wind, flapping canopies  etc plus they wont be very resistant to the salt water enviroment even if they are weather proof,

if you need to install IR devices remeber they will be running on batteries and batteries dont last too long when exposed to cold and hot extremes your safest bet is to get an outdoor or indoor pe beam and enclose in weather proof boxes to protect from the salt water then have a lead with a plug to your shed with a basic hard wired alarm or into your house alarm if you have one (which you should)

your other option as in fisho rons case is have your camera (if you have them) looking at the boat and use the alarm outputs on the dvr to trigger an alarm when it picks up motion on that camera

 Bodie,  not wanting to throw

Wed, 2012-05-30 19:27

 Bodie,

not wanting to throw a spanner in the works as I can appreciate when someone/thing decides to steal your possessions (boat, car, home, bag). Just a comment really

Where is the boat parked for this to happen?  On the front verge, in your house, etc.

You would think that after the first occurrence you would have "learnt your lesson".  Having it happen a couple of times as you said I would again have to ask what did you do about it since the first time to somewhat prevent it to happen again....... please, don't take this personally.  I think you know what I am saying, I know first hand what its like to have someone break in - in my case it was my car at work (at RPH carpark - where security is suppose to be there!!!! ha! like F.) and they stole quite a bit of stuff from my car including the "emergency $20" that was hidden in a small money bag under the car. But since that one time I keep nothing in my car.  Absolutely nothing. So if they do break in again they would just be peeved and go to the next one.

trip wire

Wed, 2012-05-30 20:05

bodie know where your coming from  i would install i trip wire around the boat to activate a buzzer or security lights etc , would love to make it live 240 volts , but going to court after electricution would cut into fishin time,   simply fix a wire one end and feed it around several points back to a limit switch pull cord type which then operates the equipment , a fine wire strung around the rig would be hard to see in the dark,  good luck

I had some trouble with persons

Wed, 2012-05-30 20:50

I had some trouble with persons in my back yard a while back and set up a simple beam sensor. Didn't wire it to a flood light or alarm - wired it to a light inisde my room which woke me up without them knowing they had set it off - Won't say much but they only set it off once

Man traps sound good but you end up in a lot of trouble.  You are legally allowed to protect your property and if you don't kill/permanantly maim them they are unlikely to go to the police and say I was beat up for something I shouldn't have been doing in the first place

Three possible solutions:1.

Wed, 2012-05-30 20:47

Three possible solutions:

1. Get a cheap IR alarm from Dick smith - I used one for a couple of years and it worked a treat - set via keyfob remote. Take it off the boat when heading out. Around $30 if I remember rightly.

2. Get a small electric fence controller and put fence tape on boat - gives a hell of a shock....

3. Relocate - which was my final solution - or secure the boat in storage

Cheers

Thieving bastards.

Wed, 2012-05-30 21:00

The stuuf that is normally actually left on this boat is nothing of real interest to anyone else, it's the fact some bastard is constantly going through another persons personal property.

I would love to catch these thieving pricks but I know that is unlikely.

Could be time for a good old fashioned steak out!! Haha

Relax just joking.

I hope u catch the bastards though.

https://www.ness.com.au/ViewProduct.asp?ProductNumber=106-286

Runs off its own battery, has a siren connected to the PIR, powered for 4 months without charing the battery.

Can setup to ring my mobile when set off.

Can be setup on a removeable board or something inside the boat.

Should do the job!

I've seen quite a lot of Ness stuff in home security (Some close friends of mine use it) and I've not seen much wrong with it?

Can you be anymore specific?

Unit is only going to cost me $350

you have to understand how a passive infra red sensor works, everything on earth gives off infra red  the sensors work by

detecting a  temperature difference by as little as 1 to 1.5 degrees in any pair of its detection zones over a specific time period say 2 or 3 seconds so inside a room the temperature will be pretty stable or rise and fall slowly allowing the pir to adjust as the ambient temp changes, outside you dont have that luxury therefore when the wind blows cooling down whatever the sensor is looking at or the sun comes out from behind a cloud it will go into alarm plus if a cat gets onboard or a bird lands on it you have the same problem. Now there are outdoor pirs you can use that are designed as alarm sensors and work very well, If you google optex vx 40 sensors you will see they have two sensor heads one goes out horizontal one angles down and both need to triggered to create an alarm, there is also a bx 80 with a different beam pattern the vx 40 also come with voice warning

and you can get a battery version so dosent need to be connected to an alarm system you could also wire a siren through it if you wanted to. I can get you a price if you like from my wholesaler. as for ness I've been in the industry a long time and wouldnt go near it!

Hi, go to bunnings they sell Nelson motion detectors for $35.00 I have just installed one in my boat, it has an output 0f 105dB all it requires is a 9v battery. Ok its not state of the art but I think that it might be enough to put the wind up the thieving b@#$%rds. I would also advise installing a security light. Best of luck.

well I Finaly got round to designing a boat alarm utilising the above mentioned vx40, self contained with blue strobe light, siren, timer set to your requirements, night time only or 24/7 operation, works on your own boat battery with cigar lighter plug, these are outdoor sensors and strobe etc sticks with velcro for easy removal adjustable range depending on boat size without being affected by things outside the boat, you could even have a remote control added if you wish. I havent priced it up yet as I only dinished it last night! but if anyone is interested should be in the region of $350 ish.
