Conecting HDSx 5 to HDS 5 chartplotter
I've got a HDSX 5 and a HDS 5 Chartplotter. I have linked them using an NMEA cable and the ethernet cable. Since then my sounder imaging is playing up. I loose my depth indicator at times (my overlay data showing me the depth) and I loose my image. It comes and goes in patches.
Sometimes I have a solid bottom and doesn't show any bait or interference and then when it does show the correct information (bait, bottom growth ect) the substructure or the solid bottom signal that I had goes really light under the thin sea bed line that the sounder records as the bottom.
I have had help from the dealer where I purchased the units but something just isn't set to the correct settings. They are suggesting its my transducer but everything worked fine before the link up.
I have now put the transducer cable back into my Chartplotter, selected on my HDS5x to read from the chartplotter and have selected 2oo mhz for the transducer setting. I still need to launch the boat and give it a test run at these settings.
Is there anything out there that tells me the correct set up proceedures/settings for linking these 2 items? My next step is a structure scanner but I want to sort this problem out first. I have taken images of the image error if anyone's interested.
Thanks Allan

You only need the ethernet
You only need the ethernet cable to link the two (until you hook up structure scan). I have sometimes lost to bottom on my HDS5 (both linked and when not linked) when I reverse and create some airation around the back and it has had trouble re connecting with the bottom . I have had to turn it off and then back on and it then comes good only happened a few times but your problem seems different. Interesting the surface stays the same colour but the bottom changes colour ???? May be head unit as well. 67.5 water temp??? I assume thats Fairenheight
disconnect both the ethernet cable and NMEA and see if it still happens if so its either the head unit or transducer, If it happens with out any of the cables connected stick the transducer cable into the Chartplotter (assuming its a combo) if it still happens the transducer is the problem- if not I'd be looking at the head unit (ie return to dealer) (sounds like you heading down that path anyway) - then if it doesn't connect the ethernet cable and see if that makes the problem return, if not hook up the NMEA - process of elimination
Otherwise see if the dealer will loan you another transducer to check if that makes any difference
Good luck. Paul

Connecting HDS5x to HDS5 chartplotter
Hi Paul thanks for the advice. Yes getting loan a a transducer was my next move. It's always a pain in the bum when you're under the dash trying different things in a sloopy sea!!!!!
I'll also do as you suggest and put the transducer into the chartplotter combo and see what happens with that one. Everything worked fine until I started to try and link the 2 units together. Computer stuff never works the first time there's always this brain-teasing period for some reason you have to go through.
I'll let you know how I go.
Many thanks Allan

Any luck yet Allen? I'm just
Any luck yet Allen?
I'm just about to install a HDS 5x sounder and I'm already running a HDS 5 Chartplotter.
Dumb question sorry, but what does linking the units together do?

If the units are linked you
If the units are linked you can scroll back on your sounder and make a waypoint on your GPS from the sounder. Example - if you have recently travelled over a lump or ledge you can scroll back to that point on the sounder and mark it on your gps. Basically saves having to turn around and go back/position over the feature to mark it.
