Boating Etiquette

I've been boating for the past 25 yrs & the events I witnessed today at Matilda Bay boat ramp has left me feeling extremely angry & violated.

Those of you that participated at the Bream Comp (where the presentation was held at Matilda Bay) need to learn some boating etiquette.

Firstly, we all confront busy ramps from time to time, but the way to approach these is to get in line, wait your turn & keep your cool.

It made many of us at the ramp today extremely pissed off to watch these guys drop their mates off to go get the car, to then push in front of all the other boats who were already waiting at the front of the queue, then hook their boats up - while the rest of us watched & waited - as we couldnt get passed the massive queue in the carpark for the guys who didnt even have boats on or near the jetty???

I can understand this taking place on a dual slipway boat ramp, where 2 boats can retrieve at the same time - but this was not the case with the single slipway & finger jetty. The person at the base of the jetty should have right of way.

The fact that it was busy on the water, then spilled out & affected the carpark by these idiots who went to get their cars & blocked up the whole carpark for those of us who had patiently been waiting in line.

Finally, I then witnessed one of these guys push past & scrape his piece of tin up the side of my boat while retrieving. This had me at boiling point. This will be reported to DPI.

Shame on you....... you have a lot to learn about boating.

Decent people should be allowed to carry guns to rid the world of dickheads and arrogant pricks. Get into them bolts, hope you have some joy with the DPI.

Yes there are a lot of wa$#@% out there .I would have refused to moved so they could not have got in. As for scratching your boat, that would have really done it for me. I seen a guy at Two Rocks do the same thing, dropped his mate of, then pushed into the front of the line .Made the boat move back down the jetty, while his mate did a drive on. They had three goes at it ,total knob head .I came in one day and there was one boat on the jetty ,I asked him if he could move forward so I to could tie up and go for my trailer. Just ignored me, well he was told to move for a second time, still ignored me . I just drove write at him he then had no chose .He then had the balls to have a crack at me ,saying I was a impatient .Total knob he got told were to go . Yes I think it will only get worse .I think you just got to stand your ground .

Try to avoid it...

Sun, 2009-02-15 21:01

...most of my fishing trips are planned to start very early in the day, before the posers/showoffs/knobs/once-a-year-don't-know-how-to-reverse-a-trailer-warriors wake up to inflict their stupidity on the rest of the world. Still gotta deal with them on the way in, but.

Winter's the best time to take the boat out, as far as I'm concerned...virtually all the clowns pack it up because it's too cold and there aren't enough people at the ramp to try to show off to.

The Stats

Sun, 2009-02-15 21:08

1990-- 25 boats owned per 1000 population

2009--31.6 boats owned per 1000 population

2025--41.6 boats owned per 1000 population (estimated)

90% of boats owned are trailerable

44 coastal ramp lanes in total

summer trend is to launch early and retrieve when sea breeze comes in.

These two peak times mean chaos at the ramps.

Whats the answer?? cheers Pete

The most time consuming

Mon, 2009-02-16 06:05

The most time consuming part at the ramp is getting the car/trailer....

The most efficient way of clearing boat ramps is to drop a car driver off and get the boat away from the ramp.  When ya trailer is reversed, get ya boat in and on.  It is not first in the marina - but this is not 'written down' anywhere and needs to be so everyone knows what to do.  This could also encourage skippers/people to teach friends/wives etc to take on the duty of car/trailer retrieval.

BUT, if solo or no licenced driver, then yeah wait ya turn and tie up.

I will continue to drop a driver off...or be dropped of to get car...but I will also be the first to help a solo out too.

Hitting your boat, well there is no excuse for that....did they ask if you were solo?

Cheers Pete

Unfortunately its the

same in Leeman, Town Ramp can have two cars/trailer reversing (if you good at reversing) down to put boats on, but no the the locals put their tinnie in slap dab in the middle of the ramp, take for ever to put their tinny tinnie on, mean while we are all waiting.

Not to bad at the Club but of course have the selfish p..ks that don't walk the boat down to the end (house rules means you are going out, then boat coming in can go in front of boat going out) or walk the boat up to the ramp (house rules means you are coming in) but at least the Bosun has now been given orders to start writing out infringement notices and then they have to appear before the committee, if repeat offenders it'll be up to the Flag if they hold their membership.  I really feel for all of you that have to use Public ramps....Leeman is the only time we use PR and very frustating I can tell you.

Another tip would be to stay

Mon, 2009-02-16 16:14

I will edit a  previous rambling reply but in short it does appear the Bream comp guys were correct in what they did and this is the most efficent way to retrieve the boat in busy times.

The first trailer at the ramp gets right of way and saves time.

Of course if times are slow tying ups not really a problem.

But if you're pushing past someone who is obviously trying to get out then you need to pull your horns in, he may need a hand, dropping people off at a single ramp then jumping cue is not on.

I thought this would spark a lot of debate this subject as folks have differents ways of going about this,,i am not sure if theres actually rules that govern this,,if the original poster writes to the DPI it would be interesting to see what the offical ruling is when coming into the ramp,,i know  when i did my RST they made a big play of tieing up and securing the vessel when coming in.

I am really glad this thread was made because if gives insight into different views of the correct procedue,it could be regional as well and different areas have different unwritten rules,,i have seen alot of boaties drop off driver at Matilda bay for instance.

I guess the best solution is to get a better fishing platform to fish off and avoid the boat ramps,,i hear Hobies are pretty good Cool

Unfortunatley with the influx of cash into WA comes the influx of CUBS (Cashed Up Bogans) who have now idea and even less regard for other peoples property. I hope you have some luck with the DPI but I doubt it. In my opinion the Skippers ticket needs to be more extensive, as the one I did, didn't cover boat launch/retrieve etiquette. I have been boating for a while (over 10 years) launching out of Cockburn and have broken up 3 blews and witnessed more than 2 crews go for it due to impatience. But I think the Cockburn Council has addressed the issue finally and installed more ramps. For the money that is generated from boat fees due to the influx of more boats I would of thought that our infrastructure would have improved. Just look at Two Rocks, one ramp for retrieving and launching.

I wonder where our money is going to?

Dont fish weekends

Tue, 2009-02-17 18:21

I am lucky enough to work shift so havent ventured to a boat ramp on the weekend for the last 4 years - drive past them every now and then and have a chuckle but i do pitty those who only get Sat & Sun to wet a line. Obviously some people need to pull their heads out of their a$$ and think about others and not just themselves for a change.

Over here in Mexico land

Tue, 2009-02-17 19:14

Over here in Mexico land (Victoria), the bigger ramps are organised so that the trailer queue is setout so that no-one can push in and is where the priority order is set. Some guys come in, tie up and the yak to their mates for the next hour and expect priority to extract their boat.

It maybe different to your setups, but works well, especially when there are defined lanes on the ramp and a controller present to make sure everyone works to the rules.

During peak season, it is amazing how many boats can be launched / retrieved per hour when everyone works to the rules (whatever they may be)

Cheers

Les
