Braid
what would cause Braid to weaken
Hi folks
I bought a talica 12 II and got the shop to spooled it with 600m of YGK PE 5 braid.
My reels drag is : strike 19 Lbs, full 39Lbs.
I've now lost 4 fish due to line breakage. I though it was my Knot, then I check the eyes of my rod.
Finally I went to the beach with my daughter and tested it. It seems to be only in certain areas. I set the drag to the minimum and walk back, with 60-100m of line out I slowly tightened the drag and pulled. it tends to snap just over the strike drag setting. (one snapped as I was starting to pull) 3 trys, 3 breakages, at differnet lengths, but none at the knots.
I'm going to replace the braid but don't want the same to happen (fairly expensive exercise).
Could the braid get damaged when it's wound on? (through heat, friction).
would the more expensive (therefore, thinner braids), be more likely to be affected?
my "ebay special" braid is still going strong, and I've had it the longest?
cheers

Can't imagine spooling (if
Can't imagine spooling (if done remotely correct )would affect it.
I have heard of bad batches b4.....(although never had one)
if you have only just spooled it up I would be taking it back to the shop you bought it from. (if it's recently bought) they may have had other complaints.

definitely sounds like a bad batch of braid
did you buy online and get dudded on some fake?
If local - get your money back.

If it is new line, then sounds like a bad batch mate.
I've had a whole 1800m spool of fairly high end line that for some reason was like this, and bought it from the US so wasn't worth returning it. In the bin she went, not worth losing a fish over.
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

I had same line on one of my reels a few years back and had exact same problem. Lost about 150-200m in one hit one day. That one snapped about a meter forward of rod tip. Shit line and ill never use it again

thanx guys
Yea, bought it local, and got them to spool it.
I'll denifitely take it back. Just loaded 300m of 80lb hollow core on the reel and checked the drag, line doesn't snap (even at full drag). Now to just get out there and find my lost fish.
I'm contemplating buying some Jerry Brown or Tuf Line braid off the net, seems just as good and 1/3 of the price.
cheers

Just had the exact same thing
Just had the exact same thing happen to me yesterday while salmon fishing. Lost 4 good fish and about $60 worth of lures. I was using 20lb braid and at times it was snapping in my hands when tighting knots and this was line I had only used a couple of times.

it definatly can be because of friction when it was spooled if it is wound on to fast the guide gets hot and burns the line i have seen the line guide get so hot it would blister your finger

YGK braid
I purchased some pe2 a while ago now and spooled up a 4000 size shimano reel. After losing a couple of lures and a few quality fish I narrowed it down to the braid failing. At first I blamed a poor braid to leader knot but this was not the case.
Unfortunately I lost a bit of trust in YGK braid, I have since started to spool my reels using Daiwa. Must have 10+ reels using Daiwa braid and yet to see it fail in a similar instance. Knot quality is good and tensile strength vs line diameter also very good.
The pe2 YGK has now made its way to the bin! I would not discount the quality of YGK though, I have some fluorocarbon leader which is good stuff...
