Split rings on lures

Why the hell do lures come with split rings on the tie point of lures? Annoys the shit out of me. If you can't tie a loop knot, learn how to! Instead of a split ring they should have a 'how to tie a loop knot' card. Pretty sure a bit of paper should be cheaper than an under sized key ring!

probably because some people prefer to use a swivel and use the split ring to attach the lure rather than re-tie a loop knot every time they want to change lures yeah?

Why do they need a split

Fri, 2014-03-21 21:20

Why do they need a split ring? You. can easily clip a snap directly to the lure. My mind I'd boggled.

swivel to split ring is (in my opinion) by far the best way to connect a lure.

Easy as anything to change, and tough as nails (unlike a clip swivel).

At a guess I'd say 95+% of GT fisherman do it this way for this very reason.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

+1. using the appropriate size quality swivel ( eg Owner, Xesta etc ) they are relatively small for their breaking strain and don't affect lure action. some people are worried about the size of the swivel compared to the size of the lure/line and use swivels too large which can affect lure action but with a quality swivel there's no need to go big and all is good :-)

I like my loop knots, I fear

Fri, 2014-03-21 21:41

I like my loop knots, I fear the clip/swivel/snap is going to interfere with swim action , particular with shallow bibs and poppers,

just a confidence thing, I've tried them but never caught fish * shrugs*

each to their own I guess

What really shits me is the halco twisty 55gram has a split ring too big for the lure hole!

Plain stupidity

Dkonig, you have me confused. Split ring to swivel, but not a clip/ snap. ???? How do you attach it?

use your thumbnail ( or split ring pliers ) to slightly prise open the end of the split ring and then feed/wind on the swivel until it is attached. maybe head into your local tackle shop ( NOT bcf ) and ask them to show you how. once you learn this you will never use a clip again!

Rocklobster summed it up. Tie

Rocklobster summed it up. Tie one end of the swivel to your leader. Use a splitring to connect the other end of the swivel to the tow point on the lure.

Easy as, and tough as also.

As has already been said, use high quality swivels (NT or Sasame for me) and they are small enough not to affect the action of the lure.

Haha, yeah mate, they live at home with my spare hooks and rings. Just never considered attaching a lure like that, makes sense, except on the bream/ whiting lures.

 Hmm... I have my leader

Fri, 2014-03-21 22:08

Hmm... I have my leader threaded thru a soft fluoro bead and tied to a swivel.  When I jig j attach the split ring of the jig.  When I troll I attach a wire trace and then attach lures via a split ring and using split ring pliers ti the wire trace..    call me old fashion, but that sounds a shit load easier than tying knots...

And that is why they put split rings on lures...

Another words, you're doing it wrong!

Fri, 2014-03-21 22:21

Ummm I use 80lb wind on tied to a snap swivel, doesn't really matter if there's a split ring or not to me, the lure still swims strongly and we still have lots of strikes. I don't see your point Sunburnt?? are youn talking about casting lures?

if you prefer to use a snap

Fri, 2014-03-21 22:34

if you prefer to use a snap then use a coastlock type snap, much stronger and reliable than the cheaper 'straight' snaps that clip into a thin tab which fails under load ;-)

i will never ever trust any type of snap swivel -have seen them fail on numerous occasions

they are the worst invention -only made so manufacturers can sell more gear when u lose them

This has

This has bothered me too. I understand the split ring on medium to large lures as i usually conect straight to a swivel as well.

But i don't understand why they go to all the trouble of making finness lures ( ie; for trout and bream ) so life like , and with such fine detail , only to put a big bloody split ring on the tow point. Not only does it stuff up the action, i find in fresh water it will make most suspending lures sink.

I usually remove them ASAP and tie a loop knot or use a small quality clip .
