Bunker Bay

hi everyone. I was just thinking that there is a long weekend coming up, and I might make my final salmon day trip for the year. Just wondering if the salmon are still thick around Bunker Bay? Would be great to get some lures in amongst them.

how long will the salmon stay around there aswell?

There is a good chance of getting one in Bunkers but note, they will not be in the bigger slow moving schools. More likely in smaller patches and moving very quickly on their way back south now that they have finished spawning.

They will still be moving from south to north along the bay from Rocky Point end so the Hospital rock at the south end of the beach is probably the best spot to see them as they come off the reef. Well and truly worth the walk down there.

Thanks for the help. Is hospital rock the one that waves sweep up? If it is then I won't be allowed there. I'm jealous because people come back down those rocks and brag about their catches and we sometimes have nothing

Hospital

That is the main rock, the hospital in the patch of reef right in front of the first lot of rocks where you come off the beach.
Injured fish will often school there before heading off down the beach, hence the name Hospital reef/ rock, this usually happens after the main run has finished and when salmon trout are making their way south on their initial run.

Fishing the main rock is ok during calm weather and low swell and can be dangerous in big swell. Not the first time I have seen peoples fish and gear floating in the small bay behind where it has been washed over the top by a big wave.

The middle reef near where they surf is another spot where fish will school up, polaroids and good eyes are needed to pick the fish.

Don't forget to use a flick rod as herring are usually there in numbers as well

Still picking up the odd Salmon on the other side of the Cape.

Last week conditions were good for land based action.

Swell was down and winds were in your back.

Wasn't targeting Salmon but did land a couple on different days in

different locations.

Check the forecast for the long weekend and plan around that.

Good luck.
