Busso mulloway help

 Hey all.

Im heading down to busso again in a few weeks and i plan on trying to catch a mulloway off the jetty. I have two combos that i might use they are a TLD 20 with 30lb mono and a Stradic 8000fi with 10kg mono on a jigwrex PE4. They are a bit on the light side but do you think that they will be able to stop a mulloway? And what lb leader do you use? i've got 40,60,80,120lb leaders im thinking of using the heavier one tho.

Also how do you guys land them on the jetty? Which would be a better option for solo night fishing a Flying gaff or a long gaff?

Cheers danno

Could be wrong

but from what i've heard the mulloway run has slowed to a crawl but this recent good weather may help bring them back on.

Use the heaviest gear and leaders you have, I'd use the 120lb leader if your serious. You'd be spewing if you lost one if you were try to get away with lighter stuff. Just hope that if/when you hook one it runs away from the jetty. So many of them are smart enough to go straight for the pylons leaving you no option but to try brute force to pull them away.

I personally use a cliff gaff but i guess a 6m pole gaff would be fine although difficult to use if fishing solo.

Also don't forget the flick rod with a baitchaser rig to catch some livies (yakka's or Herring), by far my prefered bait for croakers.

How much is a cliff gaff?

Sun, 2011-08-07 15:35

How much is a cliff gaff? How hard or easy is it to use? Is that the one you slide down your line over the fishes head?

What size hooks do you use? So the 10kilo line wouldnt be that good? I heard that most of the mulloway you hook head straight along the jetty rather then into the pylons i think they said 9 of of 10 do that i donno tho..

I got bait chasers so that should be fine, id fresh squid a good bait aswell?

Don't stress mate

your gear will be OK just use a 10m leader of 120lb. that should be fine.

I personally think a 7/0 or 8/0 is a good size for Mulloway with a running ball sinker so it moves around a little on the bottom.

As far as cliff gaffs go this is what I mean:

No idea what there worth nowdays

I usually head down

Sun, 2011-08-07 15:51

around 5-6pm or whenever the shop shuts. that way you dodge the entry fee and it gives you time to find a good spot and get setup before sunset.

From what i've heard this year most if not all have been caught before 10pm. I personally don't usually hang around much after that anyway, if they are there you'll get em by then.

Bring your EGI gear too mate, some hooters around ATM

Hi danno ,

Your TLD combo sounds the money because thats the type of gear  what i got mulloway on they were around the 18 kg mark and handled it easy .I use 80 lb leader with a bean sinker and single 8 o hook and live yellow the best this year.I use a flying gaff to lift the fish with. good dan might see u out there

Only 2 this season but have landed plently over the years. Yea i use 30 or 50 lb depends on what gear i take on the night. Alot of guys use heavy hand lines but whats the fun in that . All the fish i have caught run away from the jetty so i let go out and play them out deep before bringing them in close because they do sometimes like to head for the wood but by the time they are in that close i normaly have my 80lb leader on the reel so you can give them some curry  good luck
