Buying boat interstate

Hi all,

I am toying with the idea of buying a boat from the eastern states.

Has anyone gone down this road before?

What are some pitfalls.

What is the neccesarry paperwork to complete and some freight costs?

It is a 6.0m trailered boat from Melbourne.

frt costs depends on the

frt costs depends on the company, ring around espicially boat orientated ones. every trailer that comes into the state has to go over the pits, i think it is only welshpool or warwick that inspect them( you now have to ring and book at time to inspect) to be registered in WA. make sure have a bill of sale from the place or person you got it from.

boat is easy just have the all the details (same as above) and go to the department of marine at hillarys, easier than freo. they dont need to see the boat.

hope that helps abit, plu most boats are cheaper over east.

allow around 4 grand atleast to transport it from melbourne, but definately some bargains to be had, alot of port phillip bay boats set up for gamefishing for bermagui get sold and some very very good deals going, i would say a quick weekend flight over to inspect the boat first and u cant go wrong

If she is glass a inspection

Thu, 2011-08-11 22:28

If she is glass a inspection is a must for floors, stringer and trany by a qualified fibreglass work shop and engine diagnosis from a marine dealer there is a lot of lemons on the market and people still asking stupid money do your home work.

I bought my haines ex brissy

Fri, 2011-08-12 21:52

I bought my haines ex brissy march 2011 and it was pretty simple. Obviously flew over (used miles so free) and inspected, took for run. Truck freight over (ring around! I found a local brissy boat company who trucked every week to perth - was about 2.7K for 5.3m boat on trailer). Boat gets rego as new vessel, dead simple if you have HIN and receipt, I did it at oconner but ended up having to go to Freo to get sticker so recommend going straight to freo.

Trailer was more of a pain, you have to registar as new unless you have owned it on east coast plates for over a year which means you have to take it over the pits. I thought "no drama" as 2005 trailer in great condition BUT the chains were not stamped with Aus standard number! so back home, chop chains off, reweld new chains with magic number (dont need rated shackles though!!!) back to pits, pay more money, pass. They also like to pick on rusted rotors and any sort of bearing noise (even if that noise is brakepads rubbing!), Very cheap and quick to replace all these from places like martin trailer parts and heaps easier to do first than have to go back for reinspection.

I also recommend going to an inspection centre you can book at, I used Kelmscott, heaps better than waiting around.

Interstate purchase

Thats great info Longole.  Gee 2.7K is cheap from QLD to PER.  Can I ask how much is the pits inspection?

That is so ridiculous about the chain number.  Oh well, got  to satisfy someone.

Thank you

I got a 6.5m hardtop back

Sat, 2011-08-13 17:08

I got a 6.5m hardtop back from Melbourne for just under 3k.  Went and sea trialed it on FF points.  Spent some time working out a price once that was done sale was pending an inspection with that arranged and past organised the boat being delivered to transport, flew over to mel again on FF went to bunnings picked up some ratchet straps and rags met boat in yard final inspection handed over cash flew home waited for boat.

Some things I learnt.  DPI want to know how much you paid for the trailer not just the boat.  Make sure you get something written up saying paid $20,000 for boat and $1k for trailer with original owners signature stating the sale otherwise they won't let you reg it.  You will need to pass pit inspection so make sure trailer will pass.  Boat needs a hin and all will be good.  Also make sure you ring up the Mel revs to ensure boat and trailer is free from debt and stuff.

First inspection is $80 or

First inspection is $80 or $90 plus $20ish for a permit to move the "unlicenced" trailer. If you don't pass its $62ish for a reinspection. Of course once you pass you then have to take the bit of paper they give you and line up to actually licence it  which is another couple of hundred for stamp duty, third party and rego.

As Mejutty says very handy to have an itemised receipt for hull, motor and trailer when it comes to stamp duty.

The whole process is not really that hard or costly compared to buying an already WA registered boat you just need to factor in maybe some extra trailer repairs that wouldn't be an issue if just doing a WA licence transfer.
