Buying a boat from over east

Just wondering if anyone could give me an idea of how much it costs to get a boat transfered to WA from over east (aus), and the best way of going about it??

depends on size

Mon, 2013-06-10 13:04

Hi Jimbo,

Cost will depend on size and weight and wether it is on a trailer or not.

suggest not to go through regular boat transport companies as they are a lot more expensive on average than a regular logistics outfit.

Try loadshift.com.au for quotes as his exposes you to a number of different options and seems to encourage some competitive pricing. By ship seems to be the cheapest and only takes about 10-14 days.

And lastly, don't forget to check on insurance! A number of companies won't offer transit insurance so make sure you have it separately or that your boat insurance covers the trip. (generally if it is being transported on its trailer then boat insurance will cover it)

Hope that helps or feel free to PM me and I can let you know who I've used in the past.

Cheers

Brett

Just thinking outside the box- "I'd be available to drive it back",-if you have a suitable tow vehicle.Of course you would have to check out insurance/fuel cost/my expenses.

Would be an interesting exercise,as per risk and cost.

I've done it twice, but both times bought a boat and tow vehicle and drove back.

Both times I had bearings changed pretrip, had no issues and it cost less than $1000 in fuel.

Cannon Ball Run

Mon, 2013-06-10 21:33

I just did it at Christmas time and drove over with a Prado and dragged back a Cruisecraft 625 Outsider from Brisbane. I ended up putting a new trailer under it as it came from the Canals so didn't have to worry about bearings and the like but the licence was a little painful to sort out. I drove over with my old man in 48 hrs and it took us 3 days to get back. We covered about 9500ks. We had the car serviced before we left and again when we got back. The expression on the service guys face was priceless. Total cost was $600 in fuel over and $900 back. The only thing was to make sure insurance is covered well and a huge lightbar on the front to light up the road. to dodge the roos, emus, wombats and goats. Change drivers every 2 hours and it was a great run. Got to like the bloke your with as it is a long time in one spot but saved me about 8 grand. Quotes I had were in the 10 to 11 grand but that was before mining slowed. Guys now are chasing work as there trucks are idle so it is a buyers market.

I did look at trying to hire a car over there but no one is interested in letting you use it as a tow vehicle to haul interstate. Most Hire car insurances wont cover it especially with a couple of ton on the back. I did find a place in perth that has a troopy for hire that might have done it but the prado is mine so didn't follow up. Let me know if you want some details

its pretty good but Woody, your 100TD shouldnt be far off that?

I did the same run (Gold Coast to Gero) in mine and got 11.2/100km, car empty but 120 all the way.

Last week I did Melbourne to Gero, 4 days, 4690km (small detour to Northern Vic) for 560 litres which is around 11.9/100km in a 200TD. 120 all the way where possible-I reckon it would have been a fair bit better at 110kmh

Nah Rob, my 100 has a full length roofrack, 2" lift and 33" muddies and is always fully loaded with drawers, engel and 3 tin lids etc...gets about 14-15l/100km sitting on 120. Rack and tyres adds about 2l/100km I reckon....

and 20l/100km towing Jayco Flamingo and 3.7M tinny on the roof...

Yeah she goes pretty good. I was getting about 9l per hundred on the way over and it jumped up to about double in some spots. I have it chipped and with a 3" Manta on it and it loves the open road. With that sort of mileage and the 180L Tank we had to stop more for us than the fuel.

I also have a scanguage so our mileage was spot on. We could regulate how hard we pushed but we sat on 110 on the way over but dropped to 95 to come back. We actually had to let air out of the tyres halfway to Kal as they got a bit hard with the heat. I run MickeY T ATZ and can highly recommend them. I think the best item was the lightbar as it made it a dream to drive at night. Those things are amazing.

yep and 6 years old too. I am thinking of trading it in but theres nothing close to it other than a jeep or a cruiser. I just wish it could tow 3500kg and I would have bought back a bigger one

Light Bar

Tue, 2013-06-11 20:47

Hey Black Jen, The lightbar I got was a 32 inch unit with a full spread beam. The light is Double row of 30 led across. It was from a Farm place in Midvale. Probably from China like most things these days but definitely did the job. I also have a couple of HID units shooting down the road so I felt sorry for the poor buggers coming the other way but most have a lot of light when out at night. Turn them off and low beam feels like someone pulled a bag over your head

Wed, 2013-06-12 11:54

I bought a boat from Melbourne, start of last year.  Did all the quote stuff to have it sent over... and in the end put the car (Commodore at the time) on the train to Adelaide, drove Adelaide/Melbourne/Perth solo in 4 days, cost around $1400 all up from memory.

I had the boat surveyed before I bought it so I had the hubs and brakes sorted out before I got there.

The boat and trailer will need to be relicenced in WA, with the trailer going over the pits.

he's a cocky, he gave one of his foreign exchange workers $5000 cash + keys to a hilux,

told the bloke to drive from the south coast WA to rockhamptom to get it. Blow me down

the bloke comes back + gave him back about $3k. turned out he'd been sleeping on the

Side of the road + eating bugger all.
