Buying Chooks

Am chasing a few chooks for home, anyone know a place North of the river where you can buy them?

Called a couple but seems most don't have any at present. Young ready to lay chooks, prefer Rhode island reds.
Plenty of Isa browns about, but hoping to get the bigger reds.

Cheers
Bodie

nothing like true free range chook eggs, certainly can taste the difference between home grown chook eggs to so called free range bought eggs.  We give all our veggie scraps to the backyard neighbour for his chooks, kind return he gives us some eggs when he has some.  Can't wait for the white grapes that are growing over the chook roof, so many dangling over our side of the fence, waiting to be cut and eaten hahahaha  Has to be totally enclosed due to living in the country and ruddy foxs or feral cats.

$50 bucks a chook from this

Wed, 2014-01-08 12:24

$50 bucks a chook from this mob , RI Reds at 25wks just started laying or cheaper for younger pullets.. Must be top shelf chooks but a good investment , so much nicer than shop brought and always on hand .. I've had chooks for years and the Isa's have been the most consistent layers for me .

20 is the going rate for those red hens imo. They take a couple of weeks to get going then your on an egg per day per chook. In our house theres four and we cant keep up. We give loads away.

Chicken sex .. few years back

Wed, 2014-01-08 18:29

Chicken sex .. few years back went to a bloke in gosnells selling week old chicks , reckons for $5 ea extra I can just give you girls . I say oh yeah ok .. so he proceeds to spread their little legs whilst cradling in one hand and then with fingers on his other hand he starts prodding and squeezing the groin area , all the while his face is right amongst it . The mrs and me are just cracking up , anyways 5 mths later "Cockadoodledo" 4 out of 8 were roosters .. we got burnt lol .. Ok so for others..  don't trust the dodgy Gosnells chicken sexer .

Chicken hypnotism .. when I was a youngen the ole man would have parties and as a trick we'd go and get half a dozen chooks from the pen .. lay them still on their sides and slowly draw a chalk line back and forth from their beak for a minute or two .. dead set the chooks would lay there in the middle of the party for as long as you like until you shook them up .. I've tried periodically to replicate this with my chooks but hasn't worked thus far .. the old man tells me it only works with white chooks , might have to get mythbusters onto it .

Sorry Bodie got sidetracked lol ..

Hypnotising chooks

Wed, 2014-01-08 21:34

My 10yr old daughter has 2 Gold Laced Wyandotte hens and coincidentally we had some visitors yesterday who showed her how to hypnotise them in the way you describe, and my kids have had great fun with that over the last couple of days! It's an absolute crack up, and definitely works on chooks - even those that are not white!

Chooks!

Wed, 2014-01-08 22:49

http://www.chooknet.com.au/

Similar story here, Roosters aplenty here.  ISA Browns, good chooks and layers, but fight hard when they are gettin on and you want to introduce new birds.  Hylines are more tame if you are after browns.  Comps in bullsbrook has a few different species but we had a few wyandottes from them, wanted pullets but they only had chicks and we had a fair few casualties.  Our current layers are a Plymouth Rock and a Australorp that are survivors from seven with a few roosters sold off.  We have just introduced a bunch of new hens, one black blue chook, three silver wyandottes and we are in the process of trying to find a home for a crazy cross blend Australorp/Plymouth Rock rooster. Now his hens are gone the little bastard has started attacking Jane, the dog and the cat and most recently me.  Crows its arse off in the morning, if I cant find a farm for it ill have to eat him soon. We have had a few freebie chicks that have turned into meat birds that have died at 6 months of obesity. I should have eaten them earlier, but that was when I wasnt allowed to eat them.

Our most recent lot came from Yarloop which is a bit of a drive but its a really nice place and the birds are really well looked after.  They have a website where there is an excel sheet with stocks and ages.  Still most are pretty young with ours now been feeding for 3-4 months with no eggs yet. The Bloke is a trout fisherman also fishing Harvey dam. Could always make a mission of it and go marroning? Although maybe they avoid laying in the heat?

If anyone is keen I have some plans for a kickass treadle feeder that I made to keep the doves out of the feed, you just have to train the birds for a bit.
