There is an area called Martin's Tank Campgroud that is just outside of town that you can camp at. Its up the big limestone track called "preston beach rd"
And yeah there are heaps of whiting from Bunbury to Mandurah at the moment, it's awesome.

My friend is over, and she
My friend is over, and she seems to think you turned off preston beach road, but chances are that she is WRONG. Lol. I say this because one night we were out she was being a back seat driver and directed my friend onto a 1 way street the wrong way. I would check it out first though.

i have camped so to speak
i have camped so to speak on the beach at preston a many times and has been awesome. one of the best beaches you can come across.
my pic is taken from preston beach.
the ranger stoped one night and told me that if it was not obvious that we were staying for days and it was just a overnight fishing trip and we were fishing, they usally turn the blind eye.
but if you are set up like hotels with all the fruit they will move you along.
we have two cars side by side with a gap in the middle to picth a couple of tents and a very small fire (in winter only). we dont picth our tents till dusk and normally fish till early morn anyway. the tents are for the kids to crash while we fish, drink, drink, drink, drink, drink, fish a little, drink alot more.
have done this many times and never been hasseld.
but as the other post say, you are not allowed to camp in the dunes or the beach, so be prepaired to pack up if req.
if you are responsable and not being a dick they normally laeave you alone.
good luck

we had a trip there over
we had a trip there over easter and was a very eventful trip, the wind is a pain in the arvo but it stops just after dark. you can not camp there as such but sleeping in your car is not camping. the dunes do provide shelter to, to set up and park, got tailor, herring ,whiting, crabs, a ray and a shark in one night, but no salmon!!!

"Stayed over" many a time
I agree with everything that has been said in that technically, it's not legal to set up the Hotel California on the beach down there. It is however, IMO, a fantastic spot to do an overnighter as there is plenty of beach and some great fishing after dark and in the mornings. Arvo is great also if the wind is not too strong. A couple of vehicles close with a small camp in between has never drawn any attention from local authorities when we have fished there.
