Cant steer my boat
Gday all and I hope you all had a good chrissie
I just returned from working in exxy for 3 months and had left my 17.5 ft haine hunter in perth and my return i found out why it was a bad idea to leave the boat dormant for that period.
Flat batteries - fixed that pretty straight forward
Trailor - though it might be a good idea to replace/regrease the bearings however my boat has an axel with thos greas nipples on the ends. When i took the wheels off i discovered that i cant get into the bearings - do i need to or do i just fill the void with grease and use the nipple to pump it in.
Steering - i have no steering it seems to have siezed up. Not sure what to do here as it feels as though something will snap if i try any harder?
Any help with all or part of these problems will be much appriciated

hi there mate,
I would strip the hubs and totally re-pack the bearing by hand. I have never been a fan of the 'bearing buddy' type system on wheel bearing. I check do my bearings on both boat trailer before every trip north and check them out all the time to be sure.

steering seized
used to have the same problem with my last boat if i hadnt used it for a while, pump the steering mechanism full of grease and get some wood and a hammer and shock the steering mechanism, once its moved only a small amount it willl be ok to use by the steering wheel...then steer in full amount both directions while pumping in more grease intill it is nice and smooth.

$1000 for new cables? I'd be getting a second opinion. A complete hydraulic replacemement unit is around $1k, a new push-pull cable is only $150 plus fitting probably.

Yep. Think my last one was around the $165 for the cable and an hour or so for me to fit it.

i will repeat again
NEVER EVER pump or smear grease on a cable steering system it dries up and siezes your steering pump engine oil into it and smear it on the steering rod and you wont have the problem again just ring and talk to any marine mechanic and they will tell you the same thing grease=sieze

if the steering is stuffed,
if the steering is stuffed, a mechanic told me to go to the motor and jiggle it each way and that should free it up. dont use the wheel as it can snap the locking pin in the wheel then your up for replacing that as well
