Cast net questions

Im going to Exmouth in April and was thinking it would be good to have a cast net to get bait. Do you need a license to use them up there and if so where can I get the license.

Im also wondering where I can buy a net and for how much.

Practice Your Throwing

Tue, 2008-02-26 11:50

Once you have a net get someone to teach you to throw your net.  Then practice your throwing at home.  By doing this you will catch a lot more bait.  My brother found this out the hard way as he did not catch much until he found someone willing to teach him to throw in Exmouth.

cast net answers

Liscences: You can get them from the post office mate and they are cheap, you get a temporary one on the spot while they send out your card.

Nets: Dont muck around getting a small cast net get one a decent size they are actually a lot easier to throw. I use a 12ft net and it is a piece of piss. Get a mono net too not one of those crappy cotton ones they are shit and get too heavy and full of sand or mud. Check out this site for a good demo.

Castnet

Tue, 2008-02-26 13:06

There is a 1km exclusion zone from netting (cast as well) around the Exmouth Marina.  As tempting as it is to cast net at the boat ramp its a no-no.

Cheers,

Adam

yeah, what Brad said, don't

yeah, what Brad said, don't bother with the crap Nylon ones, make sure it's mono.

You can also get you're licence online from the fisheries website using you're credit card. You get a temporary one while they send out the card..

Learning to throw

Tue, 2008-02-26 14:14

Yep, a good clean grass area is the go for practicing.

Don't bother learning any over the shoulder techniques, you'll just get covered in crap. If your in the Kimberley the last thing you want is mud all over for while your chasing popeyes in shin deep muddy water.

Another advantage of holding it in your hands only is the fact that you can crouch, stalk and then run up on the fish (popeyes are smart buggars). Can be quite comical to watch some times.

Go the nylon monofilament nets, they sink faster and they dont get waterlogged.

The bomb

Those draw string ones are great, especially in deeper water. Does anyone know where to buy a draw string net in Perth?
