Fiji fish

Hey guys, going to book my honeymoon spot in Fiji, and already got the ok to bring a rod and reel from the missus:) Just want to know if there is much fish activity off the over water bures or off the beach. Don't really wanna spend another USD250 for a game charter when its costing a bucket load for the stay. I'm just not totally the type to sit around an island resort for 7 days i'd get bored with the stuff to do and i know my significant other would rather just sit in the spa and read a book.. So questions are:

1. Which resort do you recommend?(don't worry about price if its too expensive i'll throw it out the door)

2. Are there much fish off the beach or the overwater bures?

3. Lightest gear i should bring?

Cheers all,

Ben

Hi Mate, Congrats for engagement.
I don;t know if you can talk your wife to be to book into this place. Sounds good.

Anglers Paradise operates as a boutique sports fishing resort in the Fiji Islands. We specialise in light tackle fishing for GT (giant trevally) and assorted other species. Fishing is mainly by casting surface lures, but we also use deep and shallow jigging for other species.

It may take a bit of research. It appears some places do not allow land-based fishing. Do you know where you will be staying?

Ah ok yeah i'll do a bit of research, there are a few places i'm looking at, i'll have to ask them about fishing. I know at least one of themn i'm looking at gets all the food you eat from fishing off the sea. thanks alfred, was thinking that my popper rod would be the best bet. now to find a reel for it that not too exp. don't really wanna lose my saltiga. touch wood.

At the moment looking at
-Likuliku
-Taveuni Palms
-Maravu Plantation

These or staying on the main denarau island, in which case i'd probably not bring any gear.

Be careful Ben

Ben, It is hard to assess whether there is land-based fishing allowed on Taveuni Island or not. It is mentioned a few times as being an activity, but there are no specifics. There is areport that you can hire dinghys for fishing on the island.
Likuliku also mentions fishing, but with no specifics.
Be warned, I have read some reports where people have been told by travel agents that landbased fishing is allowed at certain places in Fiji and then when they have turned up it is banned by the local chief.
All the best Colin Hay

Don't know about that andrew

Mon, 2008-02-25 12:10

Don't know about that andrew still want the infinity pool on my balcony type resort with nothing to do with fishing or i'll be getting a lotta crap from the boss.
This is sort of a slide it in... sneaky fish since we are here not a go to a fishing resort... haha i can imagine suggesting it.
Forgot about insurance, we will have it for sure coz we will be moving around. so that takes care of my problem:)

Really just want to make sure that every beach around the islands have fish in general. GTs and such then i know wat i need to bring. Good information tho! Thanks guys, i like the productive comment Bill too :P haha

Yea i'm going to send them

Mon, 2008-02-25 12:16

Yea i'm going to send them an email direct and all, also have a family friend in fiji who's up there in the political arena, not the most pleasant of political times right now!
I'm sure he can help me out a bit with info on islands i can go to since he grew up there played with the chiefs and now fights for the fijians only now the indians hate him.

Just wondering as well what everyone here thinks or has had experiences. Thanks for looking Colin!

Amazing coincidence, but I was just handed a magazine which had a big feature on Likuliku. It looks fantastic.
If you are allowed to fish there you could throw a line out your front door or bedroom window - if you had one of the places that sit over the ocean.

Yeah been looking at that

Tue, 2008-02-26 21:57

Yeah been looking at that place, its very pricey tho. coz i want to go there for at least a week before our next stop.
the ocean bure is very nice... but looking at a few.. has to be over the water tho! just for that reason.

I read about the maui bay from andrew link deegs, trying to slowly slip it into the missus... maybe she might enjoy that a lot more!! tell ya tho its defs worth the money. complete fishing trip everything taken care off 5 star style! haha we'll see. been reading that some of the resorts you can hire your own boat with skipper for the entire trip you're there, so mihgt not even need to go to maui bay:)
