What can we do?
I went fishing last Saturday(23rd) at the North Mole for a feed of Tailor. There were an abundance of em around although a few were under size. I got there a good hour before sundown and already the tip was full with cars!
I found a nice flat rock close to the water on the inside wall. There were alot of ethnic fisher peoples already loaded and waiting, so as the sun went down I started to check if there was anything yet. To my surprise I caught a small chopper and then another and another. They were ALL returned to the water ASAP.
The rig I was using were a set of two ganged hooks with NO treble setup. I noticed a few of the other fishos close by had a small treble on theirs which I thought, WHY?. I was cutting the mullies into two and throughout the night until 11pm, worked a treat for me.
Also I saw numerous under sized fish taken and NOT returned and alot of fish kept instead of being returned to the water! I probably landed about 30 tailor and kept 8 only. I'm not too sure what the limits are but I think it is 8 fish at 30cm and only 2 over 60cm?
I was really pissed off but what can we do as Rec. fishers and why are there NO VFO's around at such a specific time when tailor are about in numbers?
It was one of the best little sessions I have had catching Tailor and I hope this can be replicated in the future!

Hi Max
I am a VFLO we are out there but our numbers are down..
I will take note of your info about the Tailor at North Mole
and see if i can organize a patrol. What time were you fishing there? At the moment a number of VFLO are doing tailor reserch at Point Walter and Floreat. Your info is valuable. If you notice people doing the wrong thing call
Fishwatch 1800 81 55 07.

Fishwatch, doi it!
I go over to them and say you've done well, can i have a look at your catch. I then say thats great can i have a closer look ie taking some out to see the size and quantity.
If they're breaking the rules i mention that, if they dont listen (mhe speaka noh ingrish)....i then ring the Fishwatch number and get rego's also. They may not come down to all calls but they will record info for future incidents and court cases etc.
I've called the Fishwatch number before after a few people didn't listen to me, watched them squirm when the officer approached them :)

Tagged Fish
If you happen to catch a tagged Tailor take down the number measure it, time, date etc and contact Dept of Fisheries with the info. You can keep the fish if it is over 30cm.

Intimidation with a high beam or get there detials down
For case of this sort, i would stand on top of the platform with a high beam light and when eversome pulls one up, I would high beam them or point a head touch there way....you should see them pull out the recfish guide quickly and measure up....if worst comes to worst, get the details down or tell them that you calling Fishwatch on them.

I was there saturday and saw
I was there saturday and saw a few undersize tailor taken which i dont understand because its not like your going to get an enjoyable feed from them, rather just a hunk of meat full of tiny bones.
There are paricular groups of people that go to the moles who have absolutely no regard for the fish they're catching or the people around them. For example, if im casting directly in front you shouldnt be casting over me... continuously. Next time someone tangles with me down there and its its because of their own stupidity im cutting lines I decided.

I just find that piping up
I just find that piping up and letting them know in a good stern voice gets the job done. Tailor Marc, Bodie and I were fishing a few weeks ago at cottesloe one morning and we saw a man taking undersize flathead. I was pretty hungover from a big night the night before (probably still half tanked) and had no drama's letting him know that he should be ashamed of himself.
I gave him plenty of stick to the point that his wife ended up putting the small Flathead back. Man was this guy angry!!
They left soon after with a few choice words from myself telling them to not come back without a tape measure.
I think the main thing to do is make a scene so alot of people in the area close by know they are doing the wrong thing and they will normally get the guilts. Just ensure that you know where to draw the line. We don't want brawls happening at rock groynes but ensure they know they are in the wrong.

You have to tell them!
Tell them the error of their ways. If they get narky at you leave it and call Fishwatch and give as many details as you can.
I think, if possible, wait until they take their catch to the car so you can get a rego number to give to Fishwatch.
Hopefully that would mean that they may get a visit by someone that may ask to see the contents of their freezer at home!

did I mention that they spoke in that unique way? I must of cause your spot on with the unique accent! There were alot of them fishing shoulder to shoulder basically, I had lines going over mine numerous times and let them know about it as well. Then come and squeeze right in beside me, not enjoyable at all. I was having a ball catching and releasing most of mine, keeping a few for a feed( bloody tasted great too), so I really couldn't be arsed stopping and running up the rocks to check who was getting into what car when. I did shine my head torch a few times when I thought the fish was under size but they turned away with there backs to me. Like alot of Goverment jobs, they are under staffed, next time I will make more of an effort to get details without starting an argument. Cheers All.

I was there from about 7pm to 11pm on Saturday night. When I got there, there were alot of people waiting to fish for tailor already. At the tip near the Red "lighthouse" on the North Mole. I don't intend to slag VFLO's off either but I have only been once fishing where I saw one and that was a few years back at the North Mole.
