Cheap Battery Insurance

Got one of these cheap Chinese ebay lithium battery jump starters after flattening one of my batteries at Rotto over Oz day. I got the boat started on the second battery but it got me thinking how traumatic it could be if you were out wide and for some reason the battery was not good.

For A$102 delivered, you get a meaty 68 Ah lithium battery with built on LED flash lighht, charger for laptops and iphones and 600 cranking amp jump starter that easily started my car, so should get the V-Rod going in case of emergency. All comes in a nice carry case that is very small, all up les than half a kilo, looks good quality, the Chinglish instructions are a bit of a laugh though.

You can get ones much smaller but they have less Ah and less cranking amps, I wanted something with a bit of oomph. It spun my race car motor over faster than the main Odyssey battery and started it easily (by itself, Odyssey disconnected) after 9 months of the car sitting in the shed!

just watch yourself if charging of 240v - have been a few issues of late with that sort of gear (not saying that model) put places up in smoke!
I have a larger older type one I keep on board does tick one thing off the worry list!

Lithium batteries

Fri, 2016-02-05 17:14

Great idea - just have to watch for the quality of the chinese charger. If a lithium battery is punctured or overchanged they have a very intense flame action that is a chemical reaction so very difficult to extinguish. Watch some youtube vids to see the action.

Make sure that seawater doesn't come into contact with the Lithium battery as that could cause it to explode and burn and only a Class 'D' extinguisher will put out the fire.

Years ago while I was working in Brazil a survey vessel had a fire start in the workshop where a lithium battery was stored and the workshop was flooded withe seawater in rough seas. The heat from the battery on fire burnt thru the steel deck and the ones below before exiting the hull. I have tried to locate the safety alert in my files but no such luck after 15+ years.

I keep my Lithium battery charger sealed in a plastic bag when its on the boat.

 Battery World in bunno gilly

Fri, 2016-02-05 21:09

Battery World in bunno gilly but all the Battery World shops carry them, you can pick one up with a small compressor for around 229 or without for 200. If you push the sales rep they will knock a bit off for you. I rate them we carry one in the car for callouts and have jumped a few 4x4 Nissan's and cruisers. My mate only runs 1 battery in his cruise craft with 130 e tec now and carries one for a backup

Should be able to pull start, most outboards as a last resort. Haven't had to do it yet but definitely can be done on my F100 yamaha.

I am in the process of

Fri, 2016-02-05 21:07

I am in the process of re-wiring my electrics.  The finished product will be a cranking battery to start and a 100AH deep cycle battery to run the house electrics (with enough cranking power for emergency start).  With a VSR (?) that monitors where the charge goes.  After starting charges the cranking battery back up first then switches over to charge the house battery.  The isolator has on / off switches for both tbe cranking and house batteries, and an emergency parralel switch in case of a flat cranking battery.

Costs a bit to set up, but an easy no nonsense solution.

Fri, 2016-02-05 21:19

i just run 2 marine century 720 s which r crancking and deep cycle although probably not as good as a dedicated deep cycle battery  they do the job. I run battery 1 on the way out then switch to battery 2 for the rest of the trip. Then reverse the procedure for the next trip. The idea is to keep them both topped up. If they r left idle and not used they will run flat.

Sun, 2016-02-07 05:17

I bought one similar to yours for just over a $100 fromSupercheap auto I think (except it weighs about 5kg and lasts forever before needing a charge) after being out one day when both batteries were somehow flat and we had to pull start the old yammy. Only had to use it once but works as well if not better than fully charged batteries
