China bans Aussie imports of rock lobster
WA'S rock lobster industry is in chaos after the Chinese government imposed restrictions on the state's exports, with prices for the shell fish plummeting.
Fisheries Minister Norman Moore today called on the Federal Government to urgently discuss the Chinese restrictions.
Earlier today, it was reported exporters were told that China would not accept imports, pending negotiations with Australian officials.
Only Australian lobster imports have been banned, while New Zealand and South Africa can still sell to China.
No explanation was given as to why only Australian imports were banned.
Mr Moore said the news has forced the lobster price down.
“WA is the largest exporter of rock lobster from Australia to China,” he said.
“At the start of the season it was expected that up to 60 per cent of this year’s total allowable catch of 5,500 tonnes would be exported live to China.
“Lobster fishers need to be mindful of likely lower returns while the situation continues and make their own business decisions on whether they fish or not.”
Mr Moore said there were alternative markets for WA rock lobsters, including Japan, Taiwan, the United States and some parts of Europe.
“Some markets are price sensitive and may take more lobsters as prices fall. While they may be less lucrative, they provide options for our exported lobsters,” Mr Moore said.

Crayfish into China
I was talking to a pro crayfisherman yesterday and he advised me the Korrean conflict has caused the closure of some parts of the Cinese border which is preventing a lot of the transport of the crayfish into China, the Chinese are woried about security, someone trying to sneak in a bomb in a crayfish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is amazing how the world can be affected by conflict between two parts of the same country fighting each other. Didn't the Ameriacns assist the North Korreans in the first place now they are assisting the South, there seems to be a patten of the Yanks encouraging conflict for their own means, am I being too suspecious.

Off the mark there
Off the mark there Banga.
The Americans, and Australia (under the UN), assisted South Korea during the Korean war which was started by a North Korean invasion. China got involved on the NK side and the war was called to a halt with the borders as they are now, however an official state of war still exisits between the two Koreas
NK are a genuine "rogue state" and pose a serious threat to the region.

Live crays
Its the export of live crays that is most affected causing the beach price to drop from $53 down to $30. Most of the fishermen have pulled their pots out of the water waiting for the price to go back up because with the newly introduced quota system they want to get as much per kilo as possible.
100% of the live crays exported go by air freight and are usually on a plane inside of 5 hours of being taken from the holding tanks at the factories so I've got no idea why border crossings with Korea would affect it.

maybe the Chinese can see we
maybe the Chinese can see we need to limit our catch to preserve our stocks...if we can't make the decision, they just did it for us....( yes I’m sarcastic folks… :-) lol)
good news for the rec divers and rec pot folks....but will we really see cheap crays in the shops??? I think not, they will just screw us for the cash they losing overseas.
On a different note, but connected…
I have seen heaps of cheap crayboats online for sale, that’s going to get a whole lot cheaper and more soon!
you can even get a 65 foot boat with good engine for under $250k theses days and as low as $150k for a 40 footer West Coaster... now where is my powerball ticket?

I say retaliate.
If they ban crays we ban their junk from entering Australia, that would cover pretty well all of their exports to Aus.

One can only
imagine the balls up that would cause. Our economy would self destruct and we would be on the bones of our arse in no time. Unfortunatly were tied to China and there's nothing we can do about it.

this always amuses me. In elections you vote for the local member, not the leader. Down here (busselton) we have a hopeless federal member who is liberal. Unfortunatly she is more interested in photo opportunities and feel good stories than actually doing anything for her electorite . That's why i didn't vote for her.

I wonder if it is actually illegal trade to go through Hong Kong. Seems like it could be a legal loophole, just one China doesnt like.
The explanation I heard before was that Australia didnt have a trade agreement and by stopping a lucrative export, they can create leverage. (Of course, they wouldnt do it for iron or gas, but crays dont halt industry in China).
I liked one persons suggestion for retaliation. Stop exporting abalone. Haha. Then wait for them to reverse their ban (shouldnt take long).

According to the recently
According to the recently wikileaks, China are questioning whether NK is a valuable ally and at the moment arent really that involved.
Surely South Africa and New Zealand would both support SK too? However, they both have trade agreements as far as I remember.

both South Africa and NZ
both South Africa and NZ fought the north in the 1950's Korean war.
Nope this has naught to do with politics and everything to do with a trade marine & farming sales agreement, watch this space!
5 year fixed lobster price at $40 /kg, lowering of tariffs on imported Chinese seafood, veggies & fruit. They have picked on commodity that can hurt us real well and truly and will squeeze us with it till they get what they want some where else.
As for us not selling iron ore / LNG etc to them, get real. Australia would be a basket case in less than 6 months with 20% unemployment if china did not take our raw ore, we need them a hell of a lot more than they need us. They a communistic dictatorship that would starve their folks in region to death to prove a point, jst look at the 3 Gorges Dam, they moved 3million by force out of a region to build it.
My view is we put all our eggs in one basket and they kicked it over. Cray boys should have had their markets spread more evenly around the world. BASIC marketing rules, don't let one buyer control your product!
We should have controls on our exports that no one economy takes more than 30~40% of a product.
