...were concerned with not just the hair, but mad cow disease as well, and my experience with Fisheries is that if things get too hard, like having to analyise bait to see if it's beef/pork/cat/etc, then they just throw a blanket ban over everything.

Re- visiting an old one

 Hi

I make my own jerky and I get left with a good deal of fat. Is it worth putting it in the pots as bait in addition to other stuff. Will try some chicken carcasses as suggested by LJ. Cheap and easy to chop into bits to fit in the bait boxes

Cheers for any replies

Illegal baits You may not fish for rock lobster using any bovine material (other than gelatine or tallow), skin or hide, anything to which mammal skin or hide is attached, abalone material or lobster material.

I think tallow is another name for fat ?

I just googled it and it says animal fat and also rendered down fat, I think you're safe as long as no skin/hide.

I'm not sure about their scientific name but the pros use pig fat. The hardest part is finding a supplier the first time I bought it the butcher wanted more for pig fat than he did for his sausages.

This guy used to sell pork fat as well as other more common cray baits.  He's a nice guy and helpful.  He explained to me as a newcomer that pork fat was known to be an effective holding bait in that it would hold the crays in the pot and was especially useful when you weren't checking your pots regularly.
