Dacron on Trolling Setups
Submitted by Paully on Sat, 2010-01-16 21:33
At the risk of asking a silly question, can anyone explain the purpose of a length of dacron betweena double and wind on leader when it comes to trolling setups. I have seen it a few times and have never really understood why this is done. Is the double and wind on leader somehow joined inside the dacron ? or is the dacron a joiner between the two, hope I haven't confused anyone.
Cheers

The dacron is hollow, it has
The dacron is hollow, it has a loop formed in it, and the mono in a fingercuff type knot inside the dacron. The Dacron loop is then joined to your main line using a loop to loop usually.

Thanks mate
What would be the purpose of that, I thought you would have just joined the double to the wind on?

Just makes a very strong
Just makes a very strong knot thats also easy on the guides. Much slimmer than any of the mono to mono knots.

thats pretty much it
the loop to loop connections retain "100% line strength" and are easy to get through the guides, particularly roller guide tips (hence the "wind on" bit). It also makes it very easy to change your leader on the water in the heat of battle.

When you say
the dacron has a loop in it, do you mean that you tie a loop in it? I don't quite follow that bit, how does a finger cuff knot stay attached to the dacron. Sorry if Im sounding simple here.

Basically
when you feed the mono leader up the hollow dacron, the dacron is weaved such that once the mono is pushed up into it, if you try and pull it out the grip of friction against it holds it in place - it works on much the same principal as a chinese finger trap.
Then with the other end, you use a splicing needle to splice the dacron back through itself and then into itself to form a loop which is again held in place by the finger trap method.
I hope that makes sense? If not I'll attempt to get some pics to illustrate.

wind-ons!
I use Richter wind-on's and they're very useful indeed for trolling/pelagics/billfish etc. I cant be farked making them so i'll stick to buying them but has to be "repuatable" wind-ons!

winds on are pretty fancy
all we ran was a long plaited double in the mainline, cats paw to the snap swivel and then connected the leader (with a loop connection on the end) to the snap swivel.
Couldn't "wind on", but the length in the double allows you to handle the leader at the boat anyway.

A. Dacron wind-ons dont go
A. Dacron or Dyneema wind-ons dont go clunk clunk through the guides like knotted wind-ons.
B. Wind the wind-on on to your reel and essentially have direct contact to the fish, which in many cases means you can lift the fish into the boat; though not advisable with marlin etc unless you like skiing. lol
A great way to topshot reels etc.
Wind-on's involve the Tanaka loop and essentially the Chinese finger trap. Trying to purely chemically adhere the Dacron loop results in failure on ocassion.
If your trolling for Macks using IGFA leader lengths essentially 95% of you line in the water is mono anyrate. No different to trolling with mono really.
Use a furled leader if extra inertia absorption is needed.
