this was covered not long
this was covered not long ago. i think a 4.3 might be a bit small to do the crossing over to steep. have you thought about the beach launch. have a look in the search section.
welcome to the site, hope you enjoy

Long way for a small boat
Welcome Cackle.
It's a tough place up there and not for the faint hearted.. maybe for those who can't think things through properly there are opportunities, if you can call them that.
You say you have fished there for 20 years. You probably and should know better than all of us. Cliffs are bad enough, don't add to the dangers with a tinnie.

Steep
Agree with the guys above. Conditions need to be perrrfect for a crossing like that in a 4.3 and I wouldnt go across in a boat that couldnt handle the southerly slop that generally we are used to up there but not withstanding that if the weather, tides and seas are good your'e looking at between 45 mins to 1.5 hours depending on the boat.
Cheers

it took us 2.5hrs to get back
it took us 2.5hrs to get back in a 7.0mtr boat punching into 40knot easterly. you would really have to pick your days to travel.

i was in denham for new years
i was in denham for new years with a 6m boat and didnt make the trip to steep because of the weather i think a beach launch would be much better with a small boat and there is the fuel factor as well have to take enought fuel for the trip there and back if that wind and swell picks up you will need a lot of fuel to get back

I have been going to steep
I have been going to steep point cliffs for around 20yrs aswell and allways fished the cliffs but my last time my mates took up a tinny and camped at shelter bay.I will tell ya what, its alot more relaxing and safer then steep.
My advice is to camp at shelter bay and head out from there if you can.
Still cant beat winching a big mack up the side of the cliffs though
