Fishing for Sambo's
Submitted by mrwinta on Sat, 2010-09-11 05:32
Hey FW... I was hoping to get some tips on how and where to catch a sambo. I launch from point perron and go out arround the sound and GI a fair bit but have never found them.... so whats the best time of year to target them, and where to look... I have knife jigs although I am told they will take anything from Mulies to anything shiny, is this true?? I have also looked for the containers and cant find them, I am told they are a good spot to fight a sambo, Is that true??
Many thanks

Containers...
...are where the spawning aggregations occur. Big sambos there but probably at least a month or so away from happening. Someone on here will likely give you the co-ordinates, not exactly a "secret spot". I think I've got them somewhere, just not inputted into the GPS!
You'll want to have gear that can be used in 100m of water and be able to handle powerful fish reaching 40kg and more!
Or you can use your sounder and try to find some broken up ground on the back edge of the Five Fathom Bank. Generally smaller sambos here (up to 10 kgs, but with the odd bigger one) but you can use lighter gear and have a similar amount of fun, just on a smaller scale. Use the larger soft plastics (Gulps/McArthy's) for these fish, and you also run the chance of a Yellowtail King or Snapper.

wondering if you have coordinates for the sea containers. I have the barges at the back of Rotto but have been trying to find containers but no luck. Would appreciate if you would share them.
