Discovery 4

Hey Guys,

i am considering a new car to tow the boat.

My boat weighs roughly 2.5T, but I would like to be able to tow 3.5T in the future (maybe I'm dreamin').

I have seen some good feedback on the Jeeps, and they can tow 3.5T, other vehicles being considered are Landcruiser 200, but they are a bit pricey.

The Disco4 specs look OK (would probably go with the 2.7L diesel).

I'm not interested in a dual cab.

I intend to take a Disco and a Jeep for a drive, but would be interested in any feedback on the Discos, good or bad. As they are a landrover, the reliability is a concern, and a few forums raise this issue, as well as there suitability to tow well.

Thanks

My mate has a D4 and has had to be sent to Perth numerous times to be fixed because of computer glitches and goes into limp mode. Also cracked a windscreen and it had to come from the UK at a fairly hefty cost.

Cheers

Disco 4

Mon, 2012-12-17 10:46

I have a Disco 4 2.7l turbo deisiel 2007 model and love it. It tows my boat (6.3 ally)with no worries and i have towed my mates 8m Marckam Dominator to exmouth with great economy (17ltrs per 100km)and still power to over take when sitting on 90/100.

Around town i get about 10.5ltrs per 100km and they have a great turning circle which is great around town.

As far as reliabilty goes just a few small issues but you get those with any cars.

My partners both got Jeeps at the same time and the amount of times i have had them tell me that they wish they never bought them is to many to list.

Hope this helps you in your quest for a new vechile and if i happen to get another new vechile my first stop will be at the landrover shop.

Cheers

Picking up a Disco 3 with 2.7

Mon, 2012-12-17 11:47

Picking up a Disco 3 with 2.7 turbo diesel this week. Drives great, can tow 3.5 t, way nicer to drive in my opinion than a landcruiser, Prado or pajero (I borrowed all of them off mates/relies for a few days and did back to back testing). Being British, it will no doubt not be as reliable as the Toyotas, but OEM spare parts are cheap as from Roverparts on the net, if your reasonably mechanically handy.

I need 7 seats, tow 3.5 t, easy for the missus to drive around town.........you are really limited to a cruiser or disco, with the cruiser being too big for everyday soccer mum stuff. Disco is meant to be the nuts offroad as well. If size no limit, go the 200 series cruiser.

Thanks Guys, sounds like it is down to the disco or jeep. Cruiser is too big and costly.

7 seats is nice, but not mandatory.

I think it is the same motor in the disco 3 and 4 so might even try  second job.

Will also be interested to see the difference in the drive between Jeep and Disco.

Thanks for the comments.

JohnF, hope the disco tows the new boat OK.

yeah, me too.......the disco 3 I got has done 113,000 km, looks like new, self levelling air suspension (great for towing!), leather seats etc....$36,500. Not too bad.

Apparently the newest model Jeep is really good and worth a look, but the second hand previous model ones in my price range are no match for the Disco.

I had a 2006 grand cherokee

Tue, 2012-12-18 08:07

I had a 2006 grand cherokee with the 3 lt V6 turbo deisel ( Mercedes Motor) while it was running it was great. But at around 80000 KMs they had turbo issues, had to get mine replaed along with a heap of sensors as well, was out of warrenty as well so it was an expensive excersise. I do believe the newer ones are better but this was a common fault with that Motor according to the jeep dealer. This also effected the 300c which had the same motor.

I've mentioned in other threads that I easily tow a 1.5T FG boat with a Freelander 2 petrol and so can swear by the Landrover's ability to tow heavier laods safely.  Have friends with D3/4 and theyre a supurb bus.  The offroad capabilities of disco/rangerover are second to none.

Cruisers

A mate has a jeep and has had problems with the auto overheating and has had to replace it. However, it does tow his 2.5t boat very well. Its not my personal experience, but 2 guys I know have had their Disco's fail badly to the point that 1 guy had his car replaced. If you are over 6 foot the cherokee can be a little cosy as well.

Unless you were hell bent on a new car, Id go with the flock and buy a 100 series diesel - or an older 200.

Im biased as Toyotas are all Ive owned, but have treated a few like shit and they have never failed or had an issue. Ive got an '04 100 series now and it tows an 7.5 ally that weighs 3.5t(ish) very well - 90-100 and overtaking no problem. However, being a petrol V8 (4.7), it sucks it at that speed - especially with a head wind. Worst case was 1 x main tank and 1/2 sub to go from Karratha to Onslow (302 k's). This was with a head wind and loaded to the hilt and doing 100-105 to catch the tide. If I go at 80k's, all good and we can get from Karratha to Exxy (580 I think) without refuelling.

Buy the diesel 4.2 (Hopefully Turbo) you wont look back.

Patrols are nice but a bit underpowered (Unless thay have been to Brunswick).

Dont know if you have tried, but jump on a few 4X4 forums and this would have definately been discussed at length.
