DON'T

When you hook onto a shark, and it won't bite you off and you can break it off, don't put the rod in the holder with a locked up drag while you reach for a knife to cut the leader.

They tend to dive back under the boat and graphite only flexes so far ........................................................................................

Tried that a couple weeks ago

Thu, 2014-06-26 13:23

Tried that a couple weeks ago when a 2.5m+ shark took my Sambo. 90lb braid 120lb leader, wouldnt pop, didnt realise my knots were so good haha. Even sitting on the deck and taking off in the boat it still wouldnt let go! Had to bring it all the way in and cut the leader

Use a boat bollard to secure the braid in a series of criss crosses and make sure you do lots of them. Once you have done that keep tension on the braid on your side of the bollard so there is no slippage and the boats momentum will break the line. Use some degree of caution doing this so that in the event the braid does slip the braid will not cut your hands. Locking drags up and pointing the rod in the direction of the line that has been suggested can damage the spool. I have heard of spools being ripped out of reel frames before.

Never leave rod in holder high sticked, locked drag, fish on or not!
Text book result there.

One better than me - LOL

Thu, 2014-06-26 13:18

With said shark at side of boat tried to cut line near mouth. Wished I had left the combo in a holder, because sharky got a second breath and bolted, taking the Samurai Jig10 and StellaSW10 000 with it.

Epic fail, and next time its going in the rod holder, rather than just resting on the freeboard beside me.

Faaark I hate sharks!!

Was still a good day !

First thing I tried was pointing the rod and holding the spool, mallon123, but wouldn't break off . No chance of getting any slack to tie to a bollard Alan J, it was one angry shark and I would rather lose a rod than fingers ! And your dead right Boydy, but took a chance knowing it would only take a split second to grab the knife, the leader was on the spool. Unfortunately it only took that split second for the bitey to dive again. but could have been worse, could have lost the lot like Crasny 1 did ! But still, it didn't spoil the day, as I always carry a spare rod and reel and apart from the broken rod we had a great day out.

Bloody oath "the Saint".

Bloody oath "the Saint". Would rather have had a broken rod and kept the Stella than the other way around. Thought I had the whaler beat, all I had to do was grab the leader, cut and all good. As soon as I grabbed the leader it bolted, dragging the leader, swivel then Braid through my hand. I can tell you braid cuts and you let go VERY fast. After a few angry tanties and tears had a beer, grabbed the spare and as I recall had a wild day out getting 2 trout and 4 Reds.

Interesting aswell before the shark episode our fished was sharked evry second one, fortunately mostly flag and black snapper which we released. After this not a single sharked fish for the rest off the day!!!???

Sharks must have been drooling down there over some bling fishing gear

Yep, thats a bugger.  Sure there'd be a few out there that would say, definitely a warranty job. LOL.  I reckon a few tackle store guys have heard that over the years.
