Entry level jigging for demersals

I've recently had the opportunity to go fishing every week out to Rotto and I've realised this is a good way for me to get into jigging.

I'm looking for advice on the right gear and jigs. At the moment I have a Shimano Cazna 4000 with about 3/4 of a 300m spool of PE4 Sunline and I switch this between an old Penn Powerspin rod and a 7ft Jarvis Walker Aquatec depending on what I'm doing. I'm wanting a rod that will allow me to chase Snapper and Dhus without paying an arm and a leg.

As for jigs, I have a couple of knife jigs and I was given a Shimano Lucanus 100g which I'm really eager to try, but I've heard the Octa jigs are a better option. Soft plastics are also something I wanna test out. Thanks and tight lines in advance !

G'day

I'd suggest starting with the business end first, using your existing gear.  Grab some 40lb flourocarbon leader, a PR bobbin and a few jigs with assists in the 100g to 150g range for fishing 40m. Practice your PR knot to join your leader to your braid on the couch until it's nice n tidy. Your 100g Lucanus will do the job... just work it really slowly, bouncing it off the bottom. After some success you'll probably want to step down to PE3 or even PE2 and get an idea of the rod n reel set up you'd like. You'll be suprised the size fish you can stop on relatively light gear when demersal jigging. Good luck!

That PR knot is impressive, until I can get a bobbin what other knots are there to use for this application ? I realise the PR is favourable for its strength. Does it matter if I use clips for my jigs or is it sufficient to tie something like a improved clinch or palomar ?

Terminal knot...

...can't go wrong with a uni...if you don't know it, learn it! One of those knots you can tie without even being able to see it, and very reliable across all breaking strains of leader material.

As for braid to mono connection, I agree with the FG comments below...even though it's not necessary, I tie my FG with a Bimini Twist because (a) you can hook the double loop onto your reel handle to maintain the required tension in the braid, and (b) the doubled up tag end in the braid provides extra cushion when covering the tag end of the leader.

Probably all this knot talk will seem a bit confusing at this stage, but will make a bit more sense with experience!

FG knot - no bobbin

FG knot - no bobbin needed

Easy to find on youtube

If I was you I'd try soft plastics first to get use to simple jigging and move onto metals later. Both equally effective

Good luck!

yep FG knot for all braid to mono/fluro (whether jigging/bottom bouncing/popping I use this knot)

there are a few different way to tie the FG but I find this one the easiest.

also best to be prepared and have a few (expensive I know) different and ...the same jigs ....you are certainly going to loose some.

(last monties trip only jigged and lost prob 5-10 per day.)
