Evinrude 175hp FICHT motor

Hi all.

I'm new to the site. First post so bare with me.

I was recommended by a friend, have liked what I have seen so far.

Anyway I am about to purchase a boat with a Evinrude 175hp FICHT outboard on it. (1999 model)

Has anyone had any experiance with these motors. I have heard good and bad reports about them.

It is a beautiful boat. Just don't want to throw $$$$ away if the motor is no good.

Any advice would be much apprieciated.

Cheers.....

Be careful

I had a 115 FICHT and it blew the head of after less than 100hrs. Was told and read its common with FICHT. I would not go near one ever. Having said that the motor was still under a warranty of sorts and Evinrude came to the party and helped out with a replacement new fuel injected model.

So very happy with Evinrude the company.

i would get a independant motor dealer to give the heads up on the Ficht on that age, the earlier models when they changed from  from evinrude ownership to bombaidere they started out with a range of issues of gearboxes and electronics which took a few years to iron out all of the faults, but otherwise i would highly recomend them , also how many hours on the clock would make a difference

It has done just over 300 hours.

The previous owner swears by it.

BUT you never know.

Mate some guys out there would sell their grandmother with a 10 year garentee. Do some enquires and then sit back and have a good think about it. Worse case senario can you afford a new motor in a couple or even 12 months down the track.

had an i and not a u?

PM PaulG - he has the exact same motor (and same age I believe!). I think he had a few injector/computer problems recently so he may be able to give you a heads up on what to look for.

spoke to my mechanic

Thu, 2009-07-09 17:38

spoke to my mechanic rescently as I had them on my first ali cat, he said that the

computer shit themselves around the 300 hr mark in the earlier models. Mine was 2000

model and the fuel injection had problems on the port side motor. I cost about $2000 to

fix. So I advise you to not go there. If the bloke hasn't had any problems yet he will

encounter some eventually.

Had a FICHT on my last boat...

It self destructed so badly that I had to bin the whole thing. That was after having to replace the computer about 12 months earlier. Personally I wouldn't touch anything they made before Bombardier took over.

I have the fitch 175hp It

Sat, 2009-07-11 21:26

I have the fitch 175hp It has been a great motor up to now .but the computor has some problem and shes not to good on cold start .Have been told can fix $3500 but whatever blew the computor the first time could happen again ,as for the fuel great on fuel as long as you don,t have a lead foot 20-25knots and shes good. I would take it to men on boats and get the guys to do a full check on her before you buy,as i say i have had no trouble until now. Mine has done 500 hours.i have trouble starting on a cold marning as the computor isn;t sending the right mixture through to the motor ,but once she has warmed up she runs great, can fish all day and don;t miss a beat.pm me i can be of any help.
