Does Anyone know when the Fads are deployed and are they at the same location each year?
Thanks in advance

The FADS should be on your chart plotter, navionics. They are about 40 km out, past Rotto, and extend about 30 km Nth to Sth. They are charted so the big ships don't run them down so i would expect their position to be pretty similar. If you google it you will get some coordinates.

They're now put out in December usually, because of war games in November.

FADs

Tue, 2011-11-08 11:09

The navy have given the Perth game Fishing Club the all clear for FAD deployment as they aren't playing their games this year.  We put them together a couple of weekends ago and will be loading the Maritime Image this afternoon for a hopeful deployment this week.

I hope they get out there as its the Club's opening weekend this weekend.

Cheers

I got asked to pop this up in the threads about the FADs, just so people know what the right thing to do is.

Just curious how long after the FADs are deployed do fish start showing up on them? Would be sweet to put a camera on them and see the chain of life evolve.

A couple of week to a month

Wed, 2011-11-09 19:36

A couple of week to a month for the littler critters to move in.

From March onward the resident dollies are usually legal, and by May they're hooters.

You can get lucky with some out-of-towners down in the current any time of the year.

What is a 'safe'

Wed, 2011-11-09 20:11

What is a 'safe' distance from the fad to fish to prevent any snags?  I don't actually know what is under the float that attracts the fish?  is there a set distance that you shouldn't be trolling / casting within?

Depends how attached to your lures you are, how good your skipper is and how light your rig is.

i'm the skipper, and i'm good! ha!  i'm attached to my lures, because i'm a tight arse! and my rig aint too light.  so what sort of clearance do you give these things?  whats underneath that actually attracts the fish?

Underneath the buoy

there is chain and rope linking it to the anchor.  Nothing else to entangle lures.

By the way!

Good news, the FAD's got deployed today with Maritime Image.  Thanks must go to John Pozzi (skipper) and his crew. Also the lads from Perth Game Fishing Club... Peter, Bob and John.  Barry Wiseman from the West went out too and I am sure we will see something in the paper shortly.  It would be lovely to see some new members join the Club that are fishing the FADs.

Alan you just hit a 1000 posts...well done.

Great news the FADs are out.

The mooring weights for the Jurien FADs are probably going up Thursday or Friday this week.

Good one

Yep spoke to Whitey today.  He reckons rain, hail or shine that he will get some FADs out.  Funding or not.  Good on him for creating a new fishery for us all.  The Prth game Fishing Club are going to have to have the WA Open up there this year for something different.

code of conduct

Tue, 2011-12-06 20:25

Hoping to make a trip this year weather permitting, and just had a few question regarding fishing ediquette,

It seems by the code of conduct ( posted above)that drifting past the fads and casting should be shared around with others wanting to use, i guess you would drift a line and then drive around back to the start and wait your turn?

I always had the opinion that you would be trolling past these fads, so if people were there fishing / casting lures that would rule out trolling past?

What is the main style of fishing that takes place out there and your thoughts on the most affective?

Any advise would be great,

Cheers.

Gday mate, I have a bit of fun when it is a bit quieter and not to windy, a bit of gentle berly, and flick a small fly amongst them, great fun and very effective.

Its good to see when people respect each other and work together, there is always a bit of drift and you can just rotate around.

Its awesome these guys that organize and put these fads together , a special thankyou to all of you champions involved
