Going by the pelagic species we came across in the 40's yesterday, this season is going to be a cracker for pelagics in Perth.....all I need is a bigger boat to get to the FADS to get into the bigger models.......
was at pgf yesterday only place i could raise a dolly as they had disappeared from furuno fad where they were in plague proportions in sizes over a meter, again what ocean side said but big eye tuna also and im hoping for a metro wahoo this year! oh and how small a boat ya talking?? we came in at 8 knots in a 5.2 tinny from there a little to late yesterday, back at ramp 10pm.... :/ when ya hook a big shark on a little reel dont waste ya time chasing it for hours on end or you'll have a wet bumpy ride home ;) (oh and on a side note if any of you billfishheads are reading seen some very edgy dollys jumping flat and fast and few seconds later was a massive surface eruption haha was great to see)
nope just 2 of us, haha are you talking about those blokes in the water spearing em? i always though i was the smallest boat out them ways but geez they were in a late 80,s tinny in the 4m range, solid offort from such a small boat.
Was out there one year and there were guys in a 14' CC, both the skipper and diver in the water at the same time. There was zero drift and they ended up swimming off the fad, towing their boat with them.
Didnt see them get in the water but looked to be a mid 4m tinny tiller steer.
We left just after they arrived. Was a big ally that had guys diving when we were there. Put the dollies off straight away and bloody painfully when there was a heap of boats around.
Was hectic with some of the big boats trolling in between all the drifting trailer boats
i got hooked up on tuesday by a 50 odd ft cruiser who was doing uturns around the fad tighter than nuns bumhole, nice pink soft oscar he was towing, would have been mine if i wasnt busy fighting a dolly, then after that he preceded to do the same thing while i was hooked up so i freespooled/dunked the rod yelled a small amount of abuse until his decky caught on and they turned off about 20ft from my line, he left shortly after so i didnt get a chance to go have a friendly word with him, may not have mattered im not sure you can here what someones saying when your heads that far up your own ass. looking forward to getting out there again i hope its still firing in a month when i get back from work.
That was the 3 of us in the tiller steer. I don't see a problem in a smallish boat provided you have half a clue about what you are doing - Know and trust your boat, have the right safety gear and pick your weather. Mines 5m with a fully sealed deck and a near new 4 stroke that i've got plenty of faith in. Plus while it might'nt be the best for the fishing, busy days are probably a better option and I'll always take someone with me who knows what going on too.
That was our first trip to the FADs and while we could get a dolly to save our selves it was an awesome day and we picked up a small YFT on the way back to rotto. Will be back next fine day for sure. (and we weren't diving - no way you'll catch me in the water out there!)
thats not the small tinny i seen then as the guys were diving, the motor was ancient and i seen a dolly go in their boat, dont be discouraged about not getting one i found it hard work to, spoke to a few people and only one said they had one onboard and apart from our boat didnt see another one hooked or landed, also looking forward to some tuna this year, landed my first metro yft on the way back in and the sashimi was deluxe!
nah mate no kungfush here theyre all in nz, we have their close rellys the ytk ;) dunno what depth they get them down to over here, all mine have been caught in 8m near rotto and needless to say ive lost alot more than landed.
Paul ,close to the fads can be quite productive as the marlin can be found harassing the dollies, but if you manage to hook a billfish in the 100 to 200kg range there is a good chance you will end up getting busted off on the fad chain.better off to stay a reasonable distance from the fads, troll the contour lines and look for the warmer water temps. At least if you hook one you have a reasonable chance of not being busted of, just my thoughts.
