FADs Pelagics gear
Submitted by Dizzy on Tue, 2011-11-08 10:36
With the FAD's nearing deployment, I'm getting keen to try some drifting / trolling for Dollies, Tuna etc when the time is right.
I've just got a Saltist LD30 2 speed, so was thinking it'd be an OK reel for this work.
What sort of gear are you lot using ??

For dollies, using bream
For dollies, using bream gear and tuna mabye 20-30lb. No need for a LD30, Have a bit of fun with them.

Cool, was thinking more
Cool, was thinking more of increased line capacity jussssst in case we hook something bigger.
Maybe I've been watching too many youtube videos with smaller reels getting emptied ..... haha.

Unless you hook something
Unless you hook something that swims for the deep i find it hard to see how you can get spooled in a boat. The only thing i have found using light gear is they can swim you around the FAD, but not hard to drag them away.

I agree on the dollies, ...
I agree on the dollies, but never even seen a tuna caught in Perth that needs anything as heavy as 30lb, maybe if it was an exceptional season!
There are very occasionally bills out there, and big ones, so maybe some 24kg outfits as well.

Always handy to have a
Always handy to have a trolling outfit, we often run into some big tuna. One session we boated 8 yellow fin around 150lb each. But for the dollies and smaller tuna, a 15-20lb outfit is great. Just purchased a 4-6 nanospeed Tairyo im itching to try out, matched with a 2500 fireblood and 15lb 8ply saltiga braid

dont forget the wahooo, us divers got a few up to 28kg from the fads and west end rotto, also some of my mates have seen some 30ish kg ones sitting 6m under the surface around the fads, just to flighty. we didnt see any marlin or sails last season, and only a few small tuna, dollies only up to 12kg, but tonnes of 2-5kg ones. thats just what we saw last season

FAD advice
G'Day Dizzy,
Our preferred gear to use, little Richter skirts like Jellybabes/Jnr Splash/Dorado/Hockzhead for tuna & dollys. Most of the fish out there are suitable for 6-10kg line class and we prefer overhead reels for trolling & spinning reels for casting. Casting at the FADS then Maria Bluecode & Rapala subwalks stickbaits are great and the Maria Duplex sinking minnow also a winner. The McArthy 4inch Finesse minnow softplastics also work well especiall if they're a bit fussy.
If you targetting bigger YFT & billfish then yes as Fishntime said.

There isn't a safe distance!
There isn't a safe distance! Can depend on the current, if there is already gear hanging off the FAD, how windy it is etc.
Give it at least 3-5m until you're sure you're not going to foul it.
