Fish Id from Cocos

I'm assuming these guys are pretty common as I picked up a couple of them. About 400-450mm in length.

Don't have a Grants fishes to look him up.

Cheers

Matt

a job fish

Definitely of the jobfish variety.

Closest I can find is a rusty job fish but they seem to be a lot redder in colour. Could maybe be a juvenile of the species.

This fish was a lot darker when it first came out of the water but lost its colour very quickly.

Smalltooth Jobfish

Matt, you were close with Rusty, but this is a Smalltooth Jobfish Aphareus furca.  The dark edged operculum and pre-operculum give it away to me (the dark bars on the cheek).

and for what it is worth, don't rely on Grant's for IDs of fishes over on the west.  It is Qld-focused and incomplete.  The most complete and accessible for tropical waters is the book by Gerry Allen.
