Fish From Today
Submitted by John_M on Sat, 2011-03-26 20:20
Had a fun day out on the water, with some mates today. Got a good feed, no luck with the pelagics unfortunately> Got smashed twice using the saltiga in 27m and picked up a small stripey which was used to catch the fish below, and a few sambo's.
Rod is 4'4" to give you an idea of the fish lengths.
Fish ID on the red fish on the bottom

IMO the leather jacket is one of if not the best eating fish u can catch i know a lot of fish are called the chicken of the ocean but leather jacket is like chicken kordonbluer skinning them is easy just off with the head gutt it then just put your fingers under the skin from the head end and just peel it back a light coat of flour cooked in butter mmmmmm
Play hard fish harder

One leather jacket I skinned
One leather jacket I skinned was really easy. I actually cut an outline from the skin and peeled it off before I took the fillet off. Came off really easy but left a gray skin on the fillet which didn't make it look all that great. You really see why they are called leather jackets. The other side I skinned normally with a knife and super easy as the skin is so tough. It was slurried so that may make a bit of difference though (it certainly does on crays!)
Looks like a great day out and a lot of variety caught. Can't quite remember the name of the family of the fish (it's in my fish book somewhere). Flame snapper perhaps? Was it out deep?

Not too sure, we picked up
Not too sure, we picked up the tuna in 130m on the outriggers. Trolled for hours around the Derwent but with no luck. Given what I've caught in the past, i was most likely smashed by sambo's or good snapper
