fishing etiquette/report
I'd like to get other boaties opinions on somehting that happened yesterday.
First day fishing up here in Coral bay, wind and swell up a little but good enough to get out to a few closer spots in (within 5kts of passage).
We had been drifting across a spot for an hour or so when a boat came over and set up a drift about 60-70maway from us. We figured they probably had spots around so were not too fussed although thought perhaps they could have tried somewhere not so close.
Anyway, they ended up moving soon after about 200m away and did a couple of drifts, all the while we continued to go over the same spot we had been at for quite a while now.
A few minutes later the boat came back to where we were, only this time they set up their drift EXACTLY on our drift line. I went to re set the drift and was not able to as they were dead on it. We politly let them know our thoughts and had our bag on reds a couple for minutes later so called it.
What are peoples thoughts on this? i know i would not go close to another boats drift even if i did have spots where they were fishing but maybe im too kind.
On another note fishing was good, bighting all day and caught a Robinson that went 66cm which i haven't seen too many that size so day 1 a success!

They wouldn't have had any marks and just copied you only time i would allow that if i knew the other boat. Used to happen all the time on the metro charters

we were in 65mof water. and some of the other fish came from 50m.
Its good to know some other boaties feel the same. Probably lucky we weren't doing it tough or we may not have been as calm about it.
For good measure we did burley the hell out of the place as we left to bring the sharks in.

If you bagged on reds 5 ks
If you bagged on reds 5 ks from the passage (good going BTW) then you prob mean south passage. (although most robo's I've caught come from north)
On a rough day not many newbies to CB head out south so they prob had the spot and the same thoughts as you. (stay closeish)
still always bad form to set up right on anothers drift.
EDIT: Ohh and no red pics means it didn't happen :)

The Pinger issue is coming back!
This irritates more than a few on here - me included.
Got pinged in Dampier, he even came up close to "Say Hi???", then commented "what a good spot!!"
2 weeks later we headed to the spot and was told to "F*$k off my spot" by the same boat. I just about lost the plot, and luckily had some photos taken by the Deckie to show him what happened 2 weeks prior.
After my tirade he sheepishly motored off!

I would've bailed
Happened to me on my first trip to Leeman, was fishing one bit of ground and next thing had 4 boats around me within half an hour, fishing the same drift. Naively put it down to them having the same mark as me until the next morning when one of them trying following me out from the ramp haha (made a pretty obvious turn in my direction and was practically in my wake).
I learnt and when I'm fishing good ground now I just bail as soon as I see another boat in the area coming towards me(away from the direction the ground was in). Don't look back and saves me getting angry and hopefully them finding my ground.
Happens a fair bit at 3 mile too - get boats driving past me when anchored and also had a couple setup in my berley trail but meh, it's 3 mile. What are you going to do. Not a good way to get respect back at the ramp though.

Hey Sparrow,
Was that you at the camp kitchen at people's park we were yapping to whilst eating bacon Sammies?. Even funnier was the old farts that we had ping us 15 miles outta Coral Bay in a 12 foot tinny... Ballsy ( see crazy ) being that far out with a ten hp motor.... Flip side best day ever from Coral Bay. At the end of the day it was closer to run back to Gnaraloo than the boat ramp. Sweet , sweet fun !

Silver Fox, no it wasn't me at the camp kitchen, im staying at a house this year. The one with Black cruiser and blue hull/ white cab plate ali boat.
Unfortunately it sounds like this kind of crap goes on alot. Not sure how people can be that rude but in todays society i guess thats the way it is. Bring on the Karma bus to mow them down i say!
Pics will follow once upload to computer to post, although no thumper reds yet. Today was a lot tougher going. Windy and a bit more swell. Only managed 2 reds to the boat and some corination trout. They were all early and after that we may aswell have got the tacklebox and tipped it over the side. every good fish got sharked. Crew was looking green so called it a day.
D_d_001 we have done ok for robbos south except its usually right on the back of the reef on a day with no swell at all.
Will see what tomorrow brings, fingers crossed on the weather improving.

Here's an interesting
Here's an interesting one:
When I head out to Little Island to catch some hezza I've always pulled up in the generally vicinity (50-100m) of a boat already doing the same, say gday and will anchor up up-current from them and lightly berley up. My thought is that it is better to keep the school in one spot and by anchoring up-current they will benefit from my berley trail.
I have received a filthy look once from an old boy but it's not like Little Island is a secret spot nor are herring in short demand once you bring in a school and I wasn't sitting in his berley trail.
Guess I should see if they are alright with me doing that next time out of courtesy.

sounds like we encountered the same boat 4 or 5 days ago. A big white marineline [EU 797] with a 300 suzuki on it that is parked in bayview next to the fence with peoples park close to the main road. We were fishing with another boat a long way south and this boat turns up and sounds around the two of us and then starts fishing in between us and we were only 80m apart .At times he was 20m from my mates boat. Then his mate turned up but he had a few more manners and stayed a reasonable distance.
We then moved about 4 miles and were fishing away then we see this same boat heading straight at us so we pulled the lines up and drove straight at him then he turned and headed out to sea so he was obviously just coming to get the spot which he pretty much has got now.
The good news was that while I was there we got 3 reds and my mate got 3 as well and these guys got nothing and the softies were using electrics in under 60m of water.
Even my missus wouldnt do that.

Pingers
don, I don't think the post is about pingers it's about etiquette on fishing too close to someone, they may of had spots close to the Mark but that is no excuse for dropping in on someone's drift. I've had this happen a couple of times and in my opinion if someone is fishing on a spot you were going to fish move on to another spot, it's a massive ocean.
My spots are so secret even the fish don't know about them !

Etiquette
I understand about the post, however I don't see the big deal about fishing the same spot. I have been fishing before where someone has come and set up on my drift. I may not have liked it but I understand that they may have the same spot marked. I don' t own the ocean. As long as your not drifting too close to each other.

Big deal
The big deal Don is, as you said, "I may not have liked it".
A lot of people dont like it and it is just plain rude. Some people spend a lot of time, effort and cash (on fuel) finding new and or better spots. When some weekend warrior pings your spot he has spent no time, effort or extra cash to deplete a spot that you think will produce for yourself and give some payback for the effort.
Now i agree that if you are Metro, in shallow, or on a spot that has a distinct marker on the charts (rise/dropoffs etc) then consider they already knew about it or had it marked. A personal space barrier is always appreciated.
If you have a spot that is hard to find, not marked on charts, away from other fishing grounds, and they follow you there or were heading somewhere else and change course to get to you, then you have a right to be pissed off.

Just rude
Do you just push in to the front of lines as well and get offended when someone pulls you up on it?
The point is as you put it, etiquette, you just don't do it.

Sharing
That is not what i said. I would be pissed to share a spot that someone else saw me on and came over to fish it at the same time as i did.
I think i posted earlier this year about a guy who followed us from TR marina up to Gilderton. Same line through reefs etc so figured he didnt have a chart ploter or was new to the area. All good for him to pull up 70m away from us on our drift and fish away. We had a few little holes we like to drift across that were only 10m or so wide and after a few small moves the bloke decided we were catching and he wasnt so moved into one of our drift lines about 30m away. That is when we decided enough was enough and left the area with the plan of fronting him if he followed.
The whole area is reefy and has the potential to produce. The spots we have on that system have produced consistantly for us and have involved hundreds of hours of trial and error. Why should we do all the work for him?
If there was any etiquette to be followed then if you plan to ping someones spot then at least approach their boat and explain that you dont have a clue/sounder/plotter and can you follow their drift. If they say F---Off then go somewhere else.

That's the process we have
That's the process we have up where we are Merv if someone has a good line and others aren't catching more often than not they will be invited to try that line. I don't have any secret spots where we are as I reckon most the demersals are transient anyway with season. I just have areas that I know produce and mix them up through the year. We all do well.

What used to be called common manners is now uncommon
Very sadly what used to be a common courtesy that was extended to other boaties is very quickly becoming a thing of the past.
Just have a look around you next time you are at a launching ramp, if you think the landing at Normandy was a blood and guts event.
It has nothing on the behaviour of people whose failures of observing the very basics of civilised behaviour together with down right attempts at bulling those of society who may not be as quick at doing things as others would like.
Many believe that they have the right to have their wishes complied with because they have a bigger boat than you.
To hell with who was inline first, and the same mind set is now becoming prevalent out at sea, respect, courtesy, common decency.
Pfffft, all these things are the extinct behaviour of an ancient society.

Only people who have earnt their fishing spots are sensitive about pinging.
I think its so rude and I cant do it, had it done a few times and it makes my blood boil.
I go elsewhere if someone is on a spot I have. Sharing drifts is for mates.

There is over 2,000,000
There is over 2,000,000 people living in the Perth metro area alone.
I don't know how many people own boats, I don't know how many people know someone who owns a boat and I don't know how many people who own a boat actually use it for fishing but I am guessing there is a shit load of people heading out each day looking for fish so you are bound to run into someone else out there in close proximity from time to time.
I have only a handfull of "spots" I call my own and on the odd occasion I find someone in that exact spot on my arrival.....so what ....I just move on to another one of "MY" spots.
If for some reason I am already on a spot and someone else turns up...I don't know if he just saw me there and want's to ping my spot or if he already had that spot marked...either way ...not everyone has the same "etiquette" as others and although I would not do it to them, there are others who don't even blink an eyelid doing it. That's the beauty of livinhg in a society!!
I figure that if someone just "drops" into your spot because they don't have any themselves then there is a fairly good chance that they don't have a bloody clue what they are doing and probably won't catch any fish anyway so apart from being bloody annoying they won't be any threat to your fishing spot and will move on and never return because they didn't catch anything.!!
Just my two cents !!
My fishing spots are so secret........... even the fish don't know where they are !!

I am glad to come across this
I am glad to come across this thread. I am pretty much new to the forum usually fish night time so I don't have this problem.
the only one time I had the chance to fish day time
this charter boat came flying over and set up the same drift. we ended within 15 m of each other .
I could not drift the second time since he cut me of with his wake as he turn his boat around.
Was very piss of for a few minutes but he got a bigger boat and I don't want to get into any collision. I just left the spot and thought poor bugger, if he is a charted boat and they don't have enough good spot to fish with what chance have I got ! HAHAHA feel even more sorry for the people that paid these guys to get them out fishing !

Just to clarify the pinger
Just to clarify the pinger issue is one thing. We cant be sure if the boat had the spot we were on already, even though the changed direction 90 degrees when they saw us. The point is its rude to park up directly on someones drift not allowing them to re drift the spot again.

Hi fellas, I am a Coral Bay
Hi fellas,
I am a Coral Bay as well and had a blatant pinging incident happen to us today. So today was a cracking day, no winds for the first time in about a week. We went out the north and headed north west prob about 22km. We found some interesting ground and set up a drift. So we're sitting there, rods in, drift anchor out and old mate in his big ally ship does the unthinkable. I could see him coming from a while away, I say " he's gonna chance his heading surely..." But No he flys past less than 30 m from our boat at 20 odd knots.
How hard is it to just change coarse a few degrees to go around another boat and remove all suspicion that you are pinging their spot. I have all this on video btw and if anyone can tell me how to share from an iPhone to this site I'll put it up. You'll recognise the boat if you've spent anything at CB, it a big plate boat, prob 28ft long, stern drive, Alvey deck winches everywhere, full of old fellas. Drives a 100 series Cruiser.
If you read this and you were on that boat or know them just know that you are rude and lack the ettiquite and manners that is expected of elder members of the fishing community. You are making it very hard for me to respect my elders when you carry on like this.
Btw, today was tough, magic conditions but got smashed by sharks. Lost countless big fish, jigs, rigs to Noahs. Very frustrating

I thought this sort of thing was history
Disappointed to hear about this crap, look what happened to the shark bay fishery with people doing exactly this sort of carry on.
Recreational Fishing Guide March 2011 ed, pages 11/12 , I don't mean to be correcting you Rob, however I thought that all those who have fish in their possession after a fishing trip also had to have a RFBL and the total catch of all those involved was not allowed to exceed the boat limit.
Thus you can only have fish in your possession without an RFBL if you are at you normal residential address.
If I'm wrong , and I fully accept that my interpretation of the rules could well be I would appreciate being put right.
Sheeesh with so many rules and regs I'll have to take a lawyer with me next time I go fishing.

Exactly
On the cool room scenario, agreed it isn't always a great look.
But without knowing what is going on, what is the drama.
Big crew that obviously fish, no doubt drink piss and I would assume bring food from where ever they have come from.
How long are they there for, 1 week, 2, 3 weeks?
Either way I recon that there would be a shit load of bait, food and piss that has to get there travelling as a group.
We take a freezer, 3 Engels plus Esky's when we head up for 2 weeks every year. All full of the above mentioned when we get there. Not all full of fish when we leave....

Shit when I first started surfing Gnaraloo 20 odd years ago, bags of spuds, rice, couple of bbq packs and 1 gas powered chess cold fridge was about it for half a dozen blokes for 12 days! Spear fish to eat there only.
How times have changed.

Meg it is absolutely clear,
Meg it is absolutely clear, you only need a RFBL to LAND fish.
Otherwise you would not be able to even give it to the people camped beside you legally, or your granny for that matter.
This isnt a good look, but it is also the way it should be.
And without knowing their circumstance who are we too judge?
They could be farmers from out Meeka on their once a year trip for all we know.

Yep re-read the guide your right Rob.
How easy it is to read something once and come away with the wrong handle on the book/instruction.
Re-read it and my interpretation on the direction is wrong, ooops.

no worries, yes it is open
no worries, yes it is open to "stretching" for sure, but trying to close that "loophole" for want of a better word (I dont think it is myself) just stops a whole lot more people taking fish home.
And as has been said before, whose to say Joe Nonfisher (90 yrs old) isnt entitled to 10kg just because his mate is catching it for him inside bag limits!
Of course if they were selling it, none of my comments above apply!
