Fishing up North
Submitted by Swan River Fisher on Wed, 2011-08-31 19:00
Hey guys,
This school holidays, I'm going up north to Broome, Exmouth, Kalbarri etc and was wondering what to catch, gear, good charters (can't take the boat because we're going on a cruise...) I really want to catch something decent because whiting and herring can only get so big!
Most of the fishing will be land based.
Cheers

in broome and exmouth just fish the beaches with some reef or rock around with lures if you want because there is normally queenies and trevally cruising around.

Queenies and trevally from the beach?
mmm i might have to go to bcf and get some heavier gear? My current rods are either little bream flickers or huge overhead reels

Mate ur bream gear is perfect
Mate ur bream gear is perfect for flicking small lures and sp's at the queenies and trevs. Just make sure you have got a spool full of light braid and a light but quality leader and ull have a ball.

mono is fine but more action
mono is fine but more action for Sp's and lures from braid lines, nothing wrong with bream gear it makes it more fun, 15lb braid will be a hoot if you have a spare spool handy

I have about 90m of line on my favourite spool, about 3.6kg (8lb) would this be enough?
Also what is a good leader? Mono, heavier braid, Flurocarbon?
Sorry am only familiar with fishing from Cockburn sound and the Swan

90m of 8lb will get tested up
90m of 8lb will get tested up there I'd have thought....
Is that a full spool? Guessing a very small reel?
150m of 8lb Sunline braid with a 20lb flouro leader has caught me plenty of solid fish on my bream gear :-)
Oh and definitely heavy mono or flouro for leader, not heavier braid. Braid is not abrasion resistant enough, and has no stretch. Defeats the purpose of using a leader.
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Yes its a small reel came
Yes its a small reel came with my 4ft rod...
So should i invest in some heavier and longer braid?
Also would a 6ft rod be addequate?

6 ft flicky would be fun
But as Dkronig said try to get about 150m + of braid and leader. Might have to upgun the reel to a 2000-4000 size depending on what you want to do with it back in Perth. Just love my Stradic CI4 4000 but then it isnt a cheapy, but will knock over big fish.

Dont use braid as a leader ever
Fish see it and it spooks them. Either Mono or better but more pricy Fluoro. On the bream gear I would go 15-20lb leader to start and see where you go. You could go lighter but then you might be banged up by trevors. Queenies fight clean so light you have a chance.
If you get burried to many times, up the leader strenght.
I am surprised you only have 90m on the spool. If it is mono change it to braid and you will have much more on there. Having said that, inshore it is going to take a big fish to spool you, but the big golden trevally that hang out there might just surprise you.

Good point Cransy. Thing is I
Good point Cransy. Thing is I already have braid on my reel. I have the berkley original, which is twice as thick as the Berkley Exceeded. Do you think that i should get a bigger reel, and if so, what make and costs? I have 100 bucks left from my 500 dollar BCF voucher, so anything under that should be fine

You'll struggle to get a reel
You'll struggle to get a reel for that sort of money, stradic 2500 would be a good option, but is double the price (or $150 online).

Oh yeah - you can definitely
Oh yeah - you can definitely get a crap reel with loads of line capacity for under $100.
Just that you will struggle to find a crap reel that is small, and still has a lot of grunt.
If you dont mind it being a bigger reel, then I'm sure you can find something suitable.
