Fishwrecked in Egypt

Well after years of planning, my wife and I finally made out trip to Egypt recently.
I have got to say that it was an even better trip than I had hoped for.
Egypt is a fantastic place. The people were great. Really helpful and friendly. The scenery was incredible. It is amazing to see how such an advanced civilisation was really created around a very thin strip of land that sits on both sides of the Nile River.
And as for Cairo. It is a crazy city, but I would go there again tomorrow. 15 million people, 5 million cars, 24 hours a day traffic jams, but it has an incredible buzz.
It is amazing to see how close the Great Pyramids at Giza and the Sphinx is to the city. The Sphinx is a lot smaller than you would picture, it is roughly the size of a bus.
The trip up the Nile on a cruise boat was a great experience, as was the visit to the temples and tombs at Aswan and Luxor. The artwork in the tombs was incredible and some of the carvings and paintings are so well preserved it looks like it was only done recently. There are plenty of yummy mummys in Egypt. The young egyptian ladies are stunning. Sorry, but customs (my wife) wouldn't let me bring you one back.
Matt (Mako).  Unfortunately you cant' take cameras into the mummy sections at the Egyptian Museum.
Below are just a few of the hundreds of pics I took. I hope you don't mind me posting them, as I know they are not fishing related, but I thought some of you may be interested.
All the best, Colin Hay

Looks like they cleaned the place up for your visit. Was like a cess pit a few years ago.

Yeah, I had heard that it was pretty dirty Jody

Tue, 2008-08-05 22:15

But I found it to be remarkably clean. I don't know if that was because it was the low season. That certainly made a big difference in visiting the historic sites. There were generally very small crowds, unlike the high season where you have to line up for hours to see some sights.
It also made a big difference on our cruise boat. I think it can cater for just over 100, but there were only 12 on our cruise.

I would suggest that you go in the low season. While it is fairly hot, the lack of crowds made visiting the various sites a lot easier. We were told that a visit to the Valley of the Kings (which we did in about 1 1/2 hours),takes at least 6 hours in high season.

It was a great time thanks mate. Only thing else I would have liked to do was a bit of fishing. I did try a handline oneday off the side of the cruise boat, but the river was flowing very fast, and I didn't have any big sinkers, so my line kept getting pulled against the side of the boat. There were plenty of fish in the Nile though.

Hi Shortly

Wed, 2008-08-06 08:05

I would have loved to spend some time fishing in the Nile, but we had a full on programme, so I only had one chance and I didn't have the right gear for the conditions. There were quite a few local fishing. I didn't see anyone catch any, but I did see quite a few fish swimming around.

I was thinking of getting her to wear my hat for one of her dances. But the show was so short, it was over before we knew what was happening. To be honest, I don't think I could have handled too much more of the music the accompanying band was playing.

Especially Cairo. Trying to explain how you could enjoy a place that was absolutely crazy is difficult. I guess the fact that it was such a vast change from quiet old Perth that really made it so interesting. My wife and I took the chance to do bit of walking around the back alleys of Cairo to see what life was really like for the locals and that was great.
The second last pic is a pretty good example of the what Cairo was like. We were lucky enough to stay in a great hotel. Old world charm with all the latest amenities. Right nerxt door was this derilict looking building which was typical of most of the Cairo homes. These flats aren't finished off as the owner has to pay a tax when his building is finished. So you have a block of flats which looks like it has been bombed, and living on the roof are goats, sheep, chickens, geese and ducks. And just about everyone of these flats has a couple of satellite discs sitting amongst the rubble.

A few captions to help explain some of the pics

Wed, 2008-08-06 11:17

Pic 3: A photo of the cruise vessel Moon Goddess which my wife and I cruised from Aswan to Luxor on. A nice vessel.
Pic 10: I cracked up when I saw the signage on this van at the Pyramid at Giza carpark. I wondered if it was for an Arabian version of the Australia TV show of a few years ago called Bargeass.
Pic 11: This an anicent hyroglyph that the conspiracy theorists claim backs up their belief than aliens helped build the pyramids.

There certainly was a funny feeling Tommo

Wed, 2008-08-06 11:24

Especially at the Valley of the Kings where we got to look at quite a few of the tombs. The other interesting things there was the proximity of the tombs to each other. For example, Tuttenkahmen's tomb is only metres away from the tomb of Ramses VI. It was a wonder they didn't dig into the other tomb. The other thing was how close to the Nile river the tombs were. I always pictured King Tutts tomb to be in the middle of nowhere, but it is really only a short donkey ride from the Nile.

We couldn't take photos in his tomb or of his treasures which

were in the Egyptian museum. Tutts tomb was okay, but not as spectacular as some of the others, particularly Ramses VI.

Awesome post and pics Colin. I used to want to be an archaeologist when I was a kid, and of course Egypt was the topic of choice when I went to the library. Interesting the Sphinx is so small, are you serious that was the ridgy didge sphinx? Unbelievable!

The proximity of the tombs is an eye opener too. I pictured them to be hidden amongst vast expanses of desert.

Cheers for the share buddy. Sounds like a great time was had!
