What's your opinion on how long fish will keep without freeezing? Lets say you caught a Dhuie and put it straight on ice. How many days would it keep for in the fridge and do you think it's better to keep them whole or in fillets? I would normally fillet and freeze if I was not going to eat it fresh within 48 hours.

If you really have ice and
If you really have ice and lots of it, you can keep a fish fresh enough to eat raw for a week.
I am not talking blocks, but cubes. Keep the fish above the water from the melted ice.

Cleaned ??
Properly bled, gutted and gilled and, as Alfred says ensuring it stays above the melt water it will last a week but with portable freezers why would you not treat a fish of that quality with the respect it deserves - eat it fresh the day it is caught and snap freeze the balance in vac bags

According to the Perth fish
According to the Perth fish processing factory, if kept at 0.5 degrees, and in vac bag can keep for 3 weeks fresh!!!!!!
Id say 4-5 days at max for me, however i get a night or 2 to eat then fresh the rest. Fish doesnt last long in my freezer....usually gone in 2 weeks.
