Gidday Daniel,

best is to spend the time cruising in the shallows over known sand, weed beds, shellgrit/rubble, limestone, reef etc and that will build a knowledge base of what virgin ground looks like. each shows as distincttive echo's, widhts, colours etc.

This will prolly only take an hour, but will help enormously in knowing what you're looking at in deeper waters that you cant visually see.

The fish echo's will then become obvious as to whats bottom, and whats fish/weed/coral etc.

as to learning the difference between baitballs / small fry / larger fish, thats half the fun of being on the water.

Good luck Daniel, they're great bits of kit when you get use to them

Pics

Hey Dan,

Here's a few examples of what they look like on the black b/g.  The first pic is rubies and greyband sitting off a ledge, heavy red signifying maybe the rubies and the blue being the swim bladders of the grey band.  That is my interpretation of the deepwater readings, but I haven't had a lot of experience out there with it yet as mine is still only 2 months old (it is the 1kw btw)  Second pic is reds, trout and other ooglies.  Note that I wasn't zoomed into the bottom as I was trolling and just came in over a ledge from 95 to 70m and had the gain very high due to the first settings I was running not being optimal for trolling.

Only way is to have it up on the net already, and then use html or bb code to link it in; {img}http://domain.com/link/to/image.jpg{/img} and then swap the {} brackets for [] ones.

Schmick   What you are

Schmick

What you are looking for is life on or just off the bottom usually over hard ground or a lump. determining species is impossible.

On the little 585 look for flare ups of green and blue on top of the ground it`s usually weed or coral  this  = fish. occasionally you`ll see a couple red/green blobs up off the bottom which would indicate singular fish but calling the species is total speculation and i have a laugh when ever i hear the old '' there were Duey`s all over the lump'', or as above rubies and grey band in 120 fa of water, makes me laugh.

It`s good fun learning and you got a good little sounder to do it with so get out there and have a go.

Cheers Boomer.
