Garlic

So anyone out there growing their own garlic and have any different cultivars they'd like to swap after harvest this year? I've become a little obsessed with Garlic lately with the lack of fishing and I'm interested to know if anyone else on here gets into their Garlic growing too.

I've got about 12 varities for about 1,000 plants this year so hoping to atleast get a few good bulbs out of it! Happy to swap a few bulbs of any good cultivars for the Perth area.

Been growing a few plants, mostly to protect others as garlic can, but suspect there is a well pickled up rabbit smelling like a Greek out there somewhere. Getting a hothouse very soon (ordered) and then Ill realy get into it.

That's something I wouldn't mind doing more of, growing garlic....use a shit load of garlic in home cooking as the missus and I make all our sauces/pastes and meals in general from scratch, no packet/jar stuff.

Use a sheet load so grow a sheet load! Not in Perth though Goodz

With the weather gods not aligning with the 'roster' gods my fruit trees & vege beds are in prime nick! Looking forward to spring now, might seed some garlic this year instead of relying on bulbs

Close enough Lamby, I actually have half of mine growing in Manjimup at my in laws farm. The weeds get to live a little longer between my visits down there than my home garden tho. If you're interested in any different types let me know as I will be down your way for 2 weeks over chrissy and New Years and hoping to have harvested everything before then.

Interested to know how you guys get rid of bloody snails & caterpillars in your vege patch ? My raise vege patch is a hotbed for baby snails & caterpillars. The kale that I grow has holes all over their leaves. My basil leave has been stripped naked without any leaves. It is a horrific sight!

I try not to use chemical pesticides or snail poison as I try to use everything that's organic.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Never had a problem with snails, I've only ever seen a few and they quickly find themselves on the neighbours roof. I hear a beer trap works well, atleast it wouldn't hurt your garden. The caterpillars on the other hand can get annoying. I honestly just pick them off by hand and my kids squish them with bricks and sticks. Haha. I don't use any pesticides either. You could try a natural spray with garlic and chilli (google). Grow some nasturtiums too as the caterpillars love them and will eat them over your veggies. You can eat the leaves and flowers in salads too, I love them! If you had to you could put a net over your plants to stop the moths from laying they eggs (caterpillars) on everything.

Use a natural spray as mentioned, or look into "companion planting" where you plant other things which divert the attention away from your wanted crops.

Snail baitUse Multiguard

Snail bait

Use Multiguard snail bait as it is pet safe if used as directed - do not heap the pellets.

It contains Iron Chelate and works wonders. The snails/ slugs have a bit of it and go and hide and die. You will not see piles of dead snails as you do with the other deadly poison baits. Remember that those that you kill will have laid eggs and a follow up baiting will have to be made later.

The "normal" snail bait will kill pets.
