Getting fisheries involved

I went for a fish this morning at my local and found a few other guys fishing there as well. Just as I was about to leave, one of the other guys there emptied his catch bucket to clean his catch. Amongst some tailor and small skippy was a pink snapper that would've measured no more than 15cm. I confronted the bloke and asked "what the hell are you doing with that"? He gave me a hostile stare and said "what".... I informed him that pink snapper have a minimum size limit of 50cm and he replied "oh well who cares"... Couldn't believe the utter disregard...
Walking back to my vehicle I thought screw this wanker, I dialed fishwatch and dobbed the prick in. Gave them all the details including rego. Unfortunately he had left before fisheries arrived, but I believe they were going to pay him a visit.
It's dickheads like him with an arrogant and ignorant attitude that wreck things for everyone who does the right thing and I wouldn't hesitate to call fishwatch again.

Well done mate hope fisheries do follow up. By the way what is the fishwatch number,i've seen that situation before but wasn't sure who to call. Might be a good number to have programmed in the mobile.

The fishwatch number is 1800 815 507. Very handy to have stored indeed.

It seems a waste when

Tue, 2012-06-26 09:50

It seems a waste when fisheries don't get there in time but its not. They will have there number on file and if they get further complaints then a case builds very quick and they 'll get dealt with heavily.

Good on ya.

yep

The difficulty is they get a call that one undersize pink snapper has been caught.  It takes them half an hour to get to the scene and halfa to get back (2 officers).  They have to work a set amount of hours each calender year, the big decision is if that hour they spend to 'maybe' catch an offender with a fine of maybe $100 or more, what is the opportunity cost - have they missed a big bust elsewhere as a result of going to that call out.  It's a pretty difficult situation really, but its still best you call and hand over the info, the more info they have to act on the better chance of busting them in the long run (as you have said)

Fisheries do pay your home a visit and check for possesion, so they might just do it for knobs like this, who not only damage the fish stock, but generally give all fishos a bad name, and we dont need this with PEW etc watching.

Always Report

Tue, 2012-06-26 17:59

Fisheries run an intelligence data base that they use to build profiles of habitual violators, always report any and everything you see.

The more information you have about the offending the better for them as they can then go about keeping an eye out for the person you have reported.

For every one report you make, fisheries would probably have another five or six on that same person (provided its not a one off thing) and from there you have contributed to taking out another ignorant person.

This all may sound a bit CSI, but after having done some work with fisheries I think they are doing the best they can with limited resources.

Any help they can get just makes them more effective at their job.
