Out as in far back from the boat? ive found with mine it was a bit of trial and error- depends on the size of the boat/motor etc... Ive found it works best just on the edge of the clear water behind the prop- too close and it will moved around in the water a lot but not give off much flash, too far and it wil just tow pretty much straight.
Your know when youve hit the sweet spot- you will be able to see it flashing around and giving off a heap of reflection. If you cant see that, its not working properly. also maske sure your using a big HD clip to connect it- have found it moves much better than just tying it on
