Greenheads

Has anyone ever been to greenheads ? I was looking at a place wiht a nice ramp and preferably a camping site but also not so far away as to scare teh family but also not so close either as its supposed to be a trial run to see if we sign up for the exmouth competition :) This way me and the Family (wife & 5 Year Old) can try a weekend of camping and fishing and see fi our tired old bones survive it :)

If anyone has any other places that might suit us please tell me about them.

thanks !

Sandy Cape

Tue, 2009-11-24 11:49

Just spent 3 days at Sandy Cape (about 10km south of Greenhead).

$15 a night for a site.  Clean drop loos (byo the rest), some nice shady spots, very nice swimming bay which is protected from the SW'er.

Spent yesterday morning swimming with the seals at an Island a few km south of Sandy and catching bull herring - great fun.

You need a 4wd to launch a boat there.  Beach is solid.  I used to launch my 19 footer there heaps when we had a shack there.

I'll put some pics up later when work permits.

Cheers Pete

Have to agree with Peter D

beautiful spot Sandy Cape, not far north of Jurien Bay, few shops to look at if wife doesn't want to go fishing or having  lay day.  You could also try Jurien Bay, excellent ramps to launch/retrieve and there are some nice restaurants/hotel plus a rip off IGA, but the liquor store there is very well priced.  Green head has a lovely boat ramp.  Leeman is 30 minutes north of Jurien Bay (if you have a small dog they except pets), ramps need a 4x4, caravan park pretty basic, take your own liquor, the store there is a rip off.  Post Office has pretty good priced petrol/diesel and frozen meat not to badly priced, plus they also have holiday units/houses, might be cheap at the moment off season.  Green head (excepts small dogs in the off season) is very quite, nothing really to do if the wife doesn't want to go fishing, caravan park pretty basic as well.

green head ramp

Is good but watch out for the line of reef that runs across the front of it. You need to travel across the front of the crayfish jetty before turning out.

I came back in at low tide and took a piece out of my new motor, just 20 meters from the jetty.Yell

Fishing at Greenhead, you

Thu, 2009-12-03 21:19

Fishing at Greenhead, you must remember one thing, there is no shelter if the weather turns to a strong Sou'wester. The seas can get quite big off Greenhead and it happens quickly, the comments that NOHA mentioned are correct, you must take care going through the reef, going out, or coming in. There also a few lumpy bits near the cray jetty, which as NOHA said can be expensive.

Thats why there are trim and tilt buttons on the throttle lever, trim your engine up a bit so you dont belt the lumpy bits. I think Jurien would be a much better option, and there are a couple of small Islands that you can shelter behind if need be.

 Jim.

Its only a 30min drive back

Fri, 2009-12-04 06:48

Its only a 30min drive back down to Jurien if the wind is up and you are book in at Greenhead.  The Islands out from Jurien are very nice.  Nearly all marine reserve, so great for snorkelling.  Spent a night there as it was blowing 30 knots.

Cheers Pete
