Gt combo

Have booked a charter for the Monties in November , looking at putting together a gt combo for some poping/ stick baiting , a Samuri pop10 with a Catalina 6500h loaded with 80 lb braid. I know it's probably not everybody's favorite choice, but am I going in the right direction   Is it overkill ? Or would 60 lb be enough. Cheers Simon

I'm not familiar with the rod but the catalina will do the job, they are a tank of a reel. 80b line is good but i would spend a few more bucks and get Varivas GT pe8 (100lb)

If I was looking for a new combo and considering GT fishing is 80-90% cast and retrive, the rest is catching fish, I would go for a Temple reef 711 Reefer,Stella 14000 and pe8 line. Light enough to cast 90 - 140g all day with the power to stop decent fish.

Yep the combo you mentioned will definitley do the job, would consider going to a quality 80-100lb braid just incase as mentioned you hook a monster. The Temple Reef 711 is a mint rod and cover both poppers and stickbaits very well. Gave mine a good stretch in Exmouth earlier this year on some models upto 20kg and it smashed them in no questions asked.

Thanks for the input guys,I was getting pretty confused with all the options out there. The TR 711 looks great but the budget won't stretch that far [and I already have the rod],and as I'm from the eastern state I won't get to GT fishing much unlike you lucky buggers. Looking at putting some Varivas Avani casting smp pe 10 on the reel and some 170/200 lb leader ..Envy you guys at having such an awesome fishery at your doorstep and us tourists only get to do it every so often ,but I'll make the most of it.Cheers ps .love the site, very helpful

If budget wont stretch to the Varivas, just get the Jerry Brown 100lb solid core.

I have it on 2 of my big stellas and have never had any issues with it no matter what fish I throw at it.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
