Handheld GPS
Submitted by hillinb on Sun, 2011-08-07 20:19
Have just finished the Winter overhaul on the barebones tinny, (Sounder, 27mhz , dual battery bank etc.)
I just have one more requirement, a handheld GPS. Can somebody point me in the right direction, after speaking to the 14 yr old at BCF I realised I may need to look elsewhere for advice.
I want something with good chartplotting capabilities.
Any good models?

get a bigger model attached to your boat
one you can read in direct sunlight. You can read it much easier and look at a bigger region at a time.
Cards are expensive, better to get a package together second hand. Put a wanted to buy in the for sale section and you should get something from $300 -$500 with charts, just not as snazzy as latest models.
Handhelds are great back ups and for taking boat to boat.

I have an e-trex for marking
I have an e-trex for marking spots out on my yak but I reckon you would want a model or 2 beyond that. Maybe the Garmin GPSMAP 62 or 78. check out www.ja-gps.com.au/GPS-Units/Handheld-GPS for some ideas but there are a few GPS places around Perth that should be able to help.

I use a Megellan Triton. It's a bit tricky reading it due to the small screen. I bought a marine map for it from BCF for $100.
It's so easy to use, you can plan your trips, mark the interesting places all at home, on the PC. Conect the Magellan, load it all up & away you go.
Works the other way too, you can mark all your spots when you're out there, then upload when you get home.

I have a triton as well and it is great. The garmins are also very good units too. With a handhelds I would strongly reccomend going colour over black and white. Also look at getting one with expanable memory (SD cards) this alows you to chagne maps and more importantly get more detailed maps for you unit.

Sorted, lets go fishing!
Cheers for the advice, and don't worry Peter that 14 yr old was by far more help to me at that store than anybody else there, it's funny how knowledge and experience is trumped by enthusiasm and energy somethimes.
