Help on the Pink Snapper

 Hey guys,

First post here! I love my fishing and my spearing and have got into some really good Baldies and some ok Dhu's in perth metro waters out from woodmans point. Although I have 1 problem with my fishing ability. The Infamous pink snapper.

Due to the current weather, water temp and resident noahs I have moved more into line fishing as of lately, especially for snapper in and around the sound. I seem to be doing everything wrong. The souder does show any fish and I was wondering if maybe a few things were to blame. So i am asking for some help or clarifications on this?

1. does boat noise like prop scare off fish in say 10m of water?

2. if there are no fish on sounder do I bother on the spots in the sound or else where?

3. is it the wrong time in the sound and should focus more on the 5 fathom, rock walls or inshore reefs like stragglers ect ect

All i seem to catch are rays, herring and snook. I usually burley up and float squid down

Boats driving around in shallows does spook them. You don't always pick them up on sounder this time of year. Try fishing tides( I like still high tide). Some times you can berley to much. A little a lot small amounts regular. Tends to not bring door mats in. Also bait change wouldn't be bad idea . Rays love squid. Try yellow tail head down. After storms can't go wrong fishing rock walls.( try keep away from lb Fishermans spots). Good luck:):)

and anchor chain noise

Don't forget when someone comes in     and drops anchor and the chain noise scares them off. I went and put a anchor chain sock over the chain... nice and quiet now lol... Anyway, good advice above mate..

I'd also like to say thanks for your advice there as well, Little Johnny.  I'll get off the squid heads then, because Ive been getting "Towed Around" by the rays.

Keep trying Sam-it took me a couple of years in the Sound, before I caught my first snapper. And it's all worth while, especially when that first snapper gets reeled in!

I've caught 4 dhues from my boat since I got it last Sep 47, 47, 48 and 49. My brother has pulled in 2 sized dhues and a mate pulled in another.

I try not to cry too much when it crosses my mind

Pinky Advise!

Anchor going up & down/chain noise/motor noise/boats driving around doesnt scare the snapper!

2. if there are no fish on sounder do I bother on the spots in the sound or else where? Its better to look for fish to increase your chances. You dont always need to see alot of fish as more will be in the area!

3. is it the wrong time in the sound and should focus more on the 5 fathom, rock walls or inshore reefs like stragglers ect ect They are well spread at the moment and mix up your spots until you get success. After a good storm front the rockwalls are productive for sure but so are offshore fringing reefs!

Tip > Look for fish in many locations, fish the spot holding more fish and if you dont get any results around the lead up to prime time (sunrise/sunset/high tide/low tide/anglers almanace bite times etc) then move. Go to another spot where you located fish and try several spots in one session. Ps Burley does work if fish are in the immediate area but if the fish arent there .... they arent there!

Ps> Plenty of time for pinkys mate, it only gets better from here ... all the best

Anyone got a sure fire way of getting a dead spot going? Have fished a few spots lately with plenty of colour on the sounder but unable to get a bite. Tried mixing up baits/plastics/jigs without too much success, just wondering if anyone has a go to last resort method for getting a hook up?

Straight hook. Bit cold but effective. Nothing ever guaranteed to work . That's why we fish and keep fishing . If you find it .you would make millions:):):)

 Sometimes the fish just

Sometimes the fish just don't wanna bite man. But when there's fish on the sounder and but they won't bite then start down sizing, lighter leader less sinker weight/no sinker weight, smaller hooks and smaller baits. I've often ended up catching legal size pinkies on a 2/0 hook with 20lb leader, tiny ball sinker and a cube of mulie. Just gotta persist with all the wrasse and skippy etc when you go that small tho.

Spose you just have to keep trying till you turn 'em on. Been a bit spoiled down south coast when even a slow day gets good fillets.

 Cheers Fellas much appreciated!

I think I may have over down the burley for the rays then. Ill try finding some yellowtail for baits, any ideas on where to catch these yourself? I use to get them in rous head but blowfish have swarmed in there now.

Bit disheartening that a few boys have waited 2+ years for decent pinkies. hopefully I get onto them a bit earlier!!! probablly not.....

Also plus one to the burley trail going towards your anchor line! happens to me too
