Help removing hydraulic steering ram
Hi
Having some trouble with a steering ram on a boat.
It was weeping some oil, so going to take it off and get it looked at by somebody.
I have unbolted the lines from it, and taken off the bolts that hold it in, but the ram itself goes through a bracket on either end, with a nut on the end of it (see bolt on the ride hand side of the photo).
To get the ram out, I assume I have to remove the bracket from one end, to allow me to manoever it out. I have undone the nut (left hand side of the shot), but the little bracket bit will not come off the shaft.
I've tried persuading it with a hammer and a few other bits and pieces, but it doesnt come off. It doesnt look like it is seized up, and when force is applied, you can move it up/down/left right very slightly, but it wont go forward and backward (ie - come off).
Is there a knack to this?
Cheers!
Dan
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Ok cheers, so it definitaly
Ok cheers, so it definitaly does just pull off? I didnt want to go all out on it in case there was some knack to it.
When I wiggle the bracket it looks like the bolt that sticks out the end was moving also, which made me think perhaps that bolt was part of the bracket, and some how attached (perhaps screwed on)to the shaft behind it closer to the engine.
I'm going to find out how much a seal kit is for the bloody thing, as it is only $400 for a brand new one from the states, but in either case I have to remove the old one first.

Hydraulic steering model and
Hydraulic steering model and manufacturer and model -> online parts diagram if you're really paranoid.
Seal kits ... ram are just rams, you ought to be able to find generic replacements at a hydraulic seal supplier in Welshpool somewhere. Otherwise, in order of price it will be sending to the USA for a seal kit, then buying one locally.

Yeah I have the online parts
Yeah I have the online parts diagram, but it just shows the order in which the bits go together, doesn't show how they go together.
There is a second hand one available here

(thats the same model)
But dont think it is worth the risk that this one might also be screwed.

Just womdering
Looking at the threaded shaft on the LH side of the bracket, there appears to be a knurled (finger adjustable) flange on it. Am wondering if the bracket is threaded the shaft is screwed through it, and that this is some kind of adjusting sytem, set by a lock nut on the end of the shaft. I don't really know, just looking at the pic's.

Yeah I was wondering this
Yeah I was wondering this also. Thought this might be why the threaded bit was moving when we moved the bracket.
Really not sure, don't want to go all out on the thing if this is the case.

Shaft
If it is an old merc grease goes had in shaft tilt motor up see if there is a grease nipple in shaft housing take it out apply heat to housing or try pumping diesel into it then tap with block of wood a bit at a time from both sides it's slow but works

I agree with Tomcat
If the force is applied to one side it will cause a torsion like effect on the other bolt. Unless you can hit it dead centre gently youll need to go bit by bit, left then right to "wiggle" it off.
