HID upgrades to vehicle lights
Submitted by Cruise Control on Mon, 2014-03-31 16:40
Rather than hijack Bodies thread, I thought I would ask the question in a new one.
Are you able to legally upgrade your standard vehicle lights to HID ? I have been reading a fair bit about this and cant really find a definitive answer. I can get an upgrade for my 100 Series to 35w 4300k HID globes for well under $300. All plug and play with the standard wiring. Doubles the light output to headlights that are already quite good but could do with just a bit extra.
Appreciate any advice as want to see the wildlife better but not attract Mr Plods attention.
cheers

Low beam is illegal. You need
Low beam is illegal. You need washer/wiper setup and self leveling. Its just going to blind everyone as hid in a reflector style headlamp housing (ie halogen) will just throw light everywhere. There designed for projector style housings.
High beam go for it. Just be careful as hid emits a lot more uv light which can melt/burn some plastic.
Im pretty sure the 100 series has a h4 globe like most cars which you will have a high/low beam in one globe. So its really a no.
My missus has a Hyundai terracan which has separate high and low beam globes and im in the process of ordering the hids for the high beam. Leaving the low beam halogen.
Hope this helps.

Nope
Do your low beams and you'll be getting attention. They are to bright.
factory fitted Hid's I think you will find, have different reflectors and probably lenses suited to the type of light they emit.
standard halogen headlights in the 100 are not made for the Hid.
if you just do your high beam, you'll be right though. Who ares how bright they are.

My 100 series
Upgraded my 100 series with a system off eBay...worked really well....low beam was like driving with no lights. And yes needed sun glasses at night with the glare from the signs...but never got high beam flash again everyone could see me coming. Since sold the car.

I found that the HID's I had
I found that the HID's I had on my old Navara ruined my night vision with reflection from road signs.
Am back on IPF halogens now and I cant say that I would ever go back to the HID's as they are a lot easier on my eyes at night and the loss of vision is neglible at best.

One of the worst things on
One of the worst things on the road is a lifted 4wd's with Hid's it blinds oncoming traffic terrible. They are made slightly better if the car is fitted with projector lenses but all Hid's that dont come out standard with the car are illegal. Try a set of phillips +100 if your looking for better light output.
