Hillarys rigs?

Can anyone give me advice on a good rig to use down at Hillarys?

Went down there early morning the other day and didnt get a single bite in 3 hours.

Was using unweighted mulies on a 3 hook gang with wire trace behind aqua - not a thing

Then tried running sinker to swivel with whitebait on a small gang, no trace, inside the marina - blowies

Would like to catch a tailor but happy with anything!!

Is night preffered over morning and what line strength?

Cheers for any help! Tongue out

Hi Turbo, Try going as light

Hi Turbo,

Try going as light as the conditions allow on the outside of the marina. I would suggest the rig you used on the inside is the one you should use on the ouside. The small er rig ggivs you a chance at herring, whiting and skippy while stil being plenty good enough to handle any average sized tailor that come along.

IMO there is virtually no need for a wire trace with gangs in the metro area. There ar very few things swimming around here that the gang alone wouldn't handle.

Hope this helps

i usually have the alvey sitting out with either a mulie or squid on with either 1/0 or 4/0 gangs------ use the baby mulies as they last longer and are smaller. you can get em from the bait shack thing there now ill use anything from a size 6 to a 1/0 single hook for herring, yellowtail, whiting, cod etc.----
use squid as much as possible for skippy------ DYNAMITE!

Try the unweighted mulie

At night on the north wall. Cut the tail off so that your mulie fits the three hook gang. This will stop your mulie from spinning around as much. You should burley up a bit and then cast your unweighted mulie behind the burley and pull it through.
A rig that the "herring masters" use a lot off the north wall at Hillarys at night is to have one of those glowlights with a lengthy leader beneath it. A ganmg of three 5/0 hooks is attached to the end. Between the glowlight and the end of the leader they have two droppers with small hooks on them. The top one should be only about 10 inches from the glowlight. They then put a mulie on the gang and bits of prawn on the smaller hooks. They don't use sinkers as the mulie provides the weight. Cast it out, let it sink, and then slowly retreive. They catch a lot of herring and sometimes a decent tailor.
Good luck with it.

Went to the narrows instead, using a bream rig with a whole prawn.

Only managed to catch this beast (apart from the hordes of blowies of course)

try hillarys northwall

about half way down. i use a slow sinking burley cage with about 30cm of leader and then a long shank hook. for burley i use pollard, flour and a few mulies mashed in.

best bait would be prawns and wogs.
