Home brewing

Howdy all, I'm looking at getting into a bit of home brewing, mainly beers, but occasional ciders for the cook. Any one on here doing some brewing and have some tips to pass on or some good beers to recommend to a novice?

cheers

Dale

Aussiehomebrewer forum helped me out a lot. Depends how far u want to go with it.

ive got a fv fridge for keeping the temps steady, and a keg set up as the bottling gets a little long in the tooth after a while.

as far as beers go just experiment. Start with basics u will b surprised at the outcomes. Good luck with it have fun

I've had better luck with ales

easy way to start off is to get the instant brew flavour kits like the coopers ones from coles or a brew store. just buy a tin of flavour and mix it with water, add yeast and a little extra sugar than it says ;)

Kegs

+1 for using kegs, a lot less mucking about and the missus will have no idea how much you have guzzled in a session without all the empty stubbies covering the table. And as crezz says start with the instant ones from the supermarket, they taste alright to me and after a few you won't care anyway.

Thanks guys, keen to try Coopers Heritage, speaking to another person who reckons that a good one to start with and is a pretty good brew as well.

Cheers

good luck mate! once you get the hang of it you can star experimenting by adding true ingrediance like ginger to ginger beer and real apples to ciders. it gets a bit addictive

If you are going to bottle

If you are going to bottle the beer, try and score some glass bottles with screw tops.  This way you wont need to use crown seals and require a bottle opener for your beers.

I scored a heap of glass mineral water bottles and used plastic coke bottle tops to get a great seal.

Brown glass is recommended for beer, as sunlight can taint the beer's flavour in white glass.
