Wondered where the colouring on the tea shirt came from.
As a youngster had a sling shot (Shang-hi) all the time, one strip of rubber though.
While in New Guinea, participating in the "Goroka Gummi" race, down the rapids, we used to make up floats (as in the Christmas Padjent)we got wind that the Australian Army was going to " get us" they'ed been saving up all the mess slops to pour over us as we went under a bridge. Unfortuatly they rolled the truck carrying the sloops on the way to the bridge.
In the mean time we had constructed a float in the shape of an army tank. and at various points around the frame we had mounted sling shots, these were probably 300mm across and used aircraft undercarriage bungie cord to power them. We could fire a bolt through the hanger wall at 50 yards. We worked all night making up rice dyed red in plastic bags. and the idea was to anchor up stream and teach the Aussie army a lesson.
Like all good plans it went wrong, the PNG police slashed our outter ring of tyre tubes, and the tank which still floated was highly unstable, we did the river trip regularly turning over and lost everything except the bottles of wine we were hanging onto.
An army Caribou and a chopper bombing us on the way down.
Those were the days!

my grandad taught me and my brother how to make them out of a forked stick, jelly rubber, a small strip of leather and the tongue from an old shoe for the pouch. believe it or not these things would sometimes kill a rabbit if you got it in the right spot. but most of the time you would miss or it would just run back under the wood heap or back into the hay shed. good fun. now I just use them to fire frozen burley pellets near my hook.
